Abstract

Complexity science aims to better understand the processes of both natural and man-made systems which are composed of many interacting entities at different scales. A disaggregated approach is proposed for simulating electricity systems, by using agent-based models coupled to continuous ones. The approach can help in acquiring a better understanding of the operation of the system itself, e.g. on emergent phenomena or scale effects; as well as in the improvement and design of future smart grids.

Abstract

Transports within industrial logistics networks are planned strategically. Due to the existence of uncertainties an operational control of transports is necessary. Thereby, dispatchers are today not supported adequately. A control approach for dynamic, complex and multimodal transports is developed, which intends to support or automate the operational control. The approach has a decentral and heterarchical organization, in which the goods and means of transports are modeled as agents.

Abstract

The complexity of technical systems increases, breakdowns occur quite often. The mission of organic computing is to tame these challenges by providing degrees of freedom for self-organised behaviour. To achieve these goals, new methods have to be developed. The proposed observer/controller architecture constitutes one way to achieve controlled self-organisation. To improve its design, multi-agent scenarios are investigated. Especially, learning using learning classifier systems is addressed.

Abstract

Dynamic service-oriented environments (SOEs) are characterised by a large number of heterogeneous service components that are expected to support the business as a whole. The present work provides a negotiation-based approach to facilitate automated and multi-level service-level management in an SOE, where each component autonomously arranges its contribution to the whole operational goals. Evaluation experiments have shown an increased responsiveness and stability of an SOE in case of changes.

Abstract

The book presents a theoretical and technical background for applying MAS (Multi Agent Systems) in Architecture, Engineering and Construction. It focuses in the early design stage and makes use of domain specific data which relate to different design domains (structural, environmental, architectural design) to inform the agent behaviors. The proposed framework is applicable especially to design problems which traditionally require the close collaboration of engineers and architects.

Abstract

Intelligent agents are software entities which can carry out some actions on behalf of clients with some degree of autonomy Through sensing the status of environment, agents perform some operations based on some possessed knowledge in order to change or influence the environment towards their goals A Multi Agent System (MAS) is a group or society of agents, and agents interact with others in the group cooperatively and or competitively in order to reach their individual or common goals In general, agents possess five common properties which are autonomy, adaptivity, reactivity, proactivity and sociability Research on agent techniques and MASs mainly focus on improving existing or invent innovative frameworks, models, mechanisms, approaches and algorithms to improve agents effectiveness and efficiency in those five aspects for advanced autonomous problem solving abilities in complex environments.

Abstract

Multi-agent systems (MAS) composed of autonomous agents representing individuals or organizations and capable of reaching mutually beneficial agreements through negotiation and argumentation are becoming increasingly important and pervasive.Research on both automated negotiation and argumentation in MAS has a vigorous, exciting tradition. However, efforts to integrate both areas have received only selective attention in the academia and the practitioner literature. A symbiotic relationship could significantly strengthen each area's progress and trigger new R&D challenges and prospects toward t
