Power rarely works by force alone: it also rules by winning hearts and minds. States, classes, and social groups all seek political dominance by exerting political, ideological, or cultural leadership over others. This idea – hegemony – is a subtle, complex one, which is too often applied crudely. In this succinct introduction, political theorist James Martin skilfully examines these nuances and shines a new light on hegemony. He introduces its component ideas and critically surveys the most influential thinking about hegemony, from Gramsci’s theory of hegemony as a revolutionary strategy and Marxist theories of the state, politics, and culture to the Post-Marxist project of radical democracy. He then considers the concept’s critical role in analysing international politics and global political economy, and evaluates the criticism that hegemony is too state-centric to truly capture the dynamics of contemporary struggles for emancipation. This lucid and accessible guide to hegemony will be essential reading for all students of radical politics and social and political theory.

This book examines the historical evolution of London's monumental architecture from its origins as a Roman colony to its status as a global city. It explores the role of grand buildings in symbolizing and reinforcing the authority of the ruling class through cultural hegemony, a concept first introduced by philosopher Antonio Gramsci. The author, Richard Barras, uses London as a case study to illustrate how these structures have served hegemonic purposes across different historical periods, from the Roman era to modern times. The book synthesizes existing research and theories to argue that monumental buildings have been used as instruments of power and collective identity, engendering pride and reverence among residents and visitors. The work is intended for readers interested in economic history, urban development, and cultural studies.

This book explores a key question for our tumultuous times of multiple global crises. Does hegemony - that is, legitimated rule by dominant power - have a role in ordering world politics of the twenty-first century ? If so, what form does that hegemony take : does it lie with a leading state or with some other force ? How does contemporary world hegemony operate : what tools does it use and what outcomes does it bring ? This volume addresses these questions by assembling perspectives from various regions across the world, including Canada, Central Asia, China, Europe, India, Russia, and the USA. The contributions in this book span diverse theoretical perspectives from realism to postcolonialism, as well as multiple issue areas such as finance, the internet, migration, and warfare. By exploring the role of non-state actors, transnational networks, and norms, this collection covers various standpoints and moves beyond traditional concepts of state-based hierarches centred on material power. The result is a wealth of novel insights on today's changing dynamics of world politics.
