Abstract

"The Commodification Gap is an insightful institutionalist perspective on the field of gentrification studies. It is based on the empirical study of the relationship between the operation of gentrification and the institutions underpinning - but also influencing and restricting - it in three neighborhoods in London, Berlin and St. Petersburg. Matthias Bernt demonstrates how different institutional arrangements have resulted in the facilitation, deceleration or alteration of gentrification across time and place. The book is based on empirical studies conducted in Great Britain, Germany and Russia and contains one of the first-ever English language discussions of gentrification in Germany and Russia. It begins with an examination of the limits of the popular "rent-gap" theory and proposes the novel concept of the "commodification gap." It then moves on to explore how different institutional contexts in the UK, Germany and Russia have framed the conditions for these gaps to enable gentrification. The Commodification Gap is an indispensable resource for researchers and academics studying human geography, housing studies, urban sociology and spatial planning."--

Abstract

Abstract

"How Gentrification is killing our cities, and what we can do about it. Leslie Kern, author of the best-selling Feminist City, travels from Toronto, New York, London, Paris and San Francisco and scrutinizes the myths and lies that surround this most urgent urban crisis of our times: gentrification. This process can be seen today in rising rents and evictions, transformed retail areas, increased policing and broken communities. But Kern argues that gentrification is not a natural process of urban regeneration. It cannot be understood in economics terms, or by class. Neither is it a question of taste, nor can it only be measured by the physical displacement of certain people. Rather, she argues, it is an extension of patriarchal, racist, colonial forces of dispossession. And radical action is necessary to end this violence. But if gentrification is not inevitable, what can we do to stop the tide? In response, Kern proposes a genuinely de-colonial, feminist, queer anti-gentrification. One that demands the right to the city for everyone and the return of land and reparations for those who have been displaced"--

Abstract

Anne Elizabeth Moore's 'Gentrifier' offers a keen exploration of the socio-economic and cultural dynamics of Detroit through the author's personal experience. Receiving a 'free' house, Moore delivers a humorous yet incisive narrative that intertwines her life with the broader context of urban development, community interaction, and systemic challenges like racism and governance inefficiency. Through a series of vignettes, the book delves into themes of homeownership, community resilience, and the complexities of gentrification. Aimed at readers interested in urban studies, social justice, and memoirs, Moore's writing juxtaposes personal anecdotes with critical insights, making it both an engaging and thought-provoking read.

Abstract

It is now over 50 years since the term 'gentrification' was first coined by the British urbanist Ruth Glass in 1964, in which time gentrification studies has become a subject in its own right. This Handbook, the first ever in gentrification studies, is a critical and authoritative assessment of the field. Although the Handbook does not seek to rehearse the classic literature on gentrification from the 1970s to the 1990s in detail, it is referred to in the new assessments of the field gathered in this volume. The original chapters offer an important dialogue between existing theory and new conceptualisations of gentrification for new times and new places, in many cases offering novel empirical evidence. Scholarly contributions are drawn from both established and up and coming experts in gentrification studies world-wide, and a deliberate attempt has been made to broaden the geographical scope of study. As such, the Handbook covers processes of gentrification in the global north and the global south. It also looks at different mutations of gentrification and pays proper attention to both resistance to gentrification and the importance of thinking about alternatives. The Handbook challenges readers to look at both the future of gentrification studies as well as the actual process of gentrification itself. Gentrification studies is interdisciplinary and this Handbook will be especially useful to scholars in many fields including geography, sociology, anthropology, planning, law, urban studies, policy studies, rural studies, development studies, and cultural studies. It will also be of value to those activists fighting gentrification worldwide.
