The thesis discusses the political and diplomatic action of the Holy See in the Middle East during the first half of the reign of John-Paul II. Its objective is to investigate the real influence of the Vatican as a "soft power" in a region of particular importance for the Roman Catholic Church between 1978 and 1992. This period of great political turbulence in this part of the world where political and religious issues are very closely linked coincides with the last years of the "world of Yalta" and the beginning of a new era in international relations. Issues such as the decision-making within the Roman Catholic Church, the limits of 'soft power' in international relations, the religious parameter of the Middle Eastern conflicts and the political dimension of inter-faith dialogue are amongst those thoroughly discussed in this work.
