Turkey: A Modern History', zoals de oorspronkelijke titel in het Engels luidt, werd voor het eerst uitgegeven in 1993. Sindsdien is het in acht talen vertaald; de Turkse editie werd meer dan dertig keer herdrukt. Inmiddels is dit boek hét gezaghebbende overzicht van de geschiedenis van het moderne Turkije. Deze uitgebreide en geactualiseerde versie bouwt voort op de twee centrale thema's: integratie van Turkije in het kapitalistische wereldsysteem en de modernisering van staat en maatschappij. Het begint met het aanhalen van de banden met Europa na de Franse Revolutie en het veranderende gezicht van het Ottomaanse Rijk in de negentiende eeuw. Daarna wordt het ontstaan van de Republiek Turkije vanuit het Ottomaanse Rijk na de Eerste Wereldoorlog op een manier beschreven die radicaal afwijkt van de traditionele visie. Als Zürcher de periode na 1950 beschrijft, richt hij zich op de groei van massapolitiek en Turkijes moeizame overgang naar een rechtsstaat, het explosieve conflict met de Koerden, de integratie van Turkije in de wereldeconomie, de opkomst van de politieke islam, de banden met het Westen en de relaties van het land met de Europese Unie. Een nieuw hoofdstuk behandelt de transformatie van Turkije onder het bewind van de AK Parti in de afgelopen twaalf jaar.

This Selected Issues paper on Turkey discusses the new monetary framework adopted by the Central Bank of Republic of Turkey (CBRT). Instead of relying on one interest rate as inflation-targeting, the CBRT resorted to raising it as inflation pressures intensify and lowering it as they abate. The first version of the framework does not seem to have achieved significant reduction in external and internal imbalances, but the second version of the framework has witnessed an unwinding of imbalances.

Of het nu gaat om vluchtelingen, terrorisme of economie: Turkije en Europa hebben elkaar hard nodig. Maar de relatie loopt stroef. Volgens dit boek is dat niet alleen de schuld van president Erdogan, die met 52 procent van de stemmen rechtstreeks werd verkozen. Hem kan wel verweten worden het ondemocratische spel van de Atatürkgezinde oppositie, de terreurbeweging PKK en het schimmige Gülen-netwerk met brio mee te spelen. Maar westerse politici en media doen ook volop mee, door dubieuze oppositiekrachten kritiekloos te steunen. Deze geopolitieke dimensie alarmeert veel Turken, wat koren op de molen is voor Erdogan. Dries Lesage pleit voor een nieuwe benadering. Meer empathie en eerlijker Turkijenieuws kunnen ons dichter bij een betere relatie brengen.

This is one of the first academic books about Fethullah Gülen, a Turkish scholar and preacher, and the civic movement he inspired in Turkey and ultimately throughout the world. The movement is rooted in moderate Islam and is committed to educating youth, fostering interfaith and intercultural dialog, assisting the needy in society and contributing to global peace. Based on interview data and visits to Gülen-inspired institutions, the book describes the movement from a sociological perspective, especially through the lens of social movement theory. It is the first book, grounded in empirical methodology, to describe the movement to a Western audience.
