Venues de très loin, certaines images ont durablement façonné notre imaginaire : celles de l'exilé, du réfugié ou encore du migrant, participent de cette structuration et font ainsi partie de notre patrimoine mental. Leur diffusion fut assurée par les contes et les légendes, par les chants, les prières et les comptines mais aussi par des représentations visuelles qui, au fil du temps, en ont précisé les contours. Les religions ont fourni les récits nécessaires pour que s'édifie une puissante iconographie de l'exil. Adam et Ève chassés du Paradis, La Fuite en Égypte, L'Exode, sont autant d'exemples que Duccio, Giotto, Masaccio ou Fra Angelico… vont peindre sur les murs des églises ou des monastères. Dans la folle accélération qui caractérise les temps modernes, émerge une iconographie considérable de la fuite, de l'errance et de l'exclusion, provoquées par les guerres, les régimes de terreur ou la pénurie. Les peintres et les photographes, de Marc Chagall à Robert Capa, s'emparent du sujet et accueillent dans leurs œuvres ces « rayés de l'histoire » au destin aussi incertain qu'éprouvant. Les vidéos et les installations de nombreux artistes contemporains interrogent très opportunément aujourd'hui un phénomène qui ne cesse de prendre de l'ampleur. Mona Hatoum, Francis Alÿs, Kimsooja, Adrian Paci, Mohamed Bourouissa, Barthélémy Toguo, Zineb Sedira… et bien d'autres encore, produisent des œuvres riches de sens dans lesquelles les notions de frontières et d'identité font l'objet d'un traitement qui peut fluctuer entre le documentaire et le récit fictionnel et poétique.

"Picturing Punishment examines representations of criminal bodies as they moved in, out, and through publicly accessible spaces in the city during punishment rituals in the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic. Once put to death, the criminal cadaver did not come to rest. Its movement through public spaces indicated the potent afterlife of the deviant body, especially its ability to transform civic life. Focusing on material culture associated with key sites of punishment, Anuradha Gobin argues that the circulation of visual media related to criminal punishments was a particularly effective means of generating discourse and formulating public opinion, especially regarding the efficacy of civic authority. Certain types of objects related to criminal punishments served a key role in asserting republican ideals and demonstrating the ability of officials to maintain order and control. Conversely, the circulation of other types of images, especially inexpensive paintings and prints, had the potential to subvert official messages. As Gobin shows, visual culture thus facilitated a space in which potentially dissenting positions could be formulated while also bringing together seemingly disparate groups of people in a quest for new knowledge. Combining a diverse array of sources including architecture, paintings, prints, anatomical illustrations, and preserved body parts, Picturing Punishment demonstrates how the criminal corpse was reactivated, reanimated, and in many ways reintegrated into society."--

Plus de vingt ans après son abolition en France, les questions posées par l'application de la peine de mort sont réexaminées ici à travers quinze études historiques. Violence légale, l'exécution est par essence paradoxale. Une première série de décalages surgit dans sa mise en oeuvre concrète et ses suites, concernant le statut et le traitement particuliers du condamné. Mais dans sa perception et sa mise en scène, l'exécution publique hésite aussi entre la fête macabre et la leçon salutaire, le spectacle et l'édification. Son symbolisme artificiel, profane ou religieux, en fait ainsi un objet de narration artistique.
