Dans le monde indien où les savoirs textuels sont particulièrement valorisés et l’action matérielle subordonnée aux autres modes d’existence, il est difficile de penser ensemble savoir et faire, d’imaginer l’existence de savoirs techniques. Que l’on examine les conceptions traditionnelles du savoir ou les projets de développement récents, la notion même de savoir-faire sonne comme un non-sens. Or, les savoirs pratiques, les savoir-faire, font partie de toutes les activités humaines et la manière dont ils sont construits, transmis, appropriés, est une question cruciale pour comprendre la formation et l’évolution des sociétés. Néanmoins, faire émerger de tels savoirs est d’autantplus difficile qu’ils ne sont pas reconnus comme tels. A l’heure où l’interrogation sur les savoirs traverse toutes les disciplines, cet ouvrage collectif entend répondre à la nécessité d’explorer une dimension occultée dans les études indiennes. Les auteurs de ce volume ont considéré le métier, les techniques, comme autant de beux de savoir, mettant en lumière les aspects cognitif, sensible, social etpoUtique de ces savoirs indissociables de l’action matérielle. Les études réunies s’intéressent d’abord au théâtre et à la danse, où la nécessité d’un apprentissage et de compétences spécifiques est admise et bée à des traditions prestigieuses. Elles pénètrent ensuite à l’intérieur de métiers que les préjugés considèrent comme sans quabfîcation, éclairant l’intelligence et la sensibibté des hommes et des femmes qui les exercent. Elles poursuivent avec des activités résolument modernes et montrent les strates profondes de savoirs supposés objectif, ainsi que le bricolage conceptuel et humain qu’ils génèrent. Elles contribuent toutes à la réflexion générale sur les savoirs techniques, dévoilant à la fois des mécanismes sociaux et cognitifs développés dans l’exercice des métiers, une part de l’imaginaire de ces acteurs sociaux, souvent de bas statut, ainsi que des formes desociabitité…

La participation du patronat à la formation professionnelle a longtemps été occultée en France - l’État étant considéré comme l’acteur central de ce domaine d’activité. Pourtant, l’implication des industriels en la matière ne saurait être sous-estimée. Dès les années 1920, Renault choisit par exemple de se doter de sa propre école. L’enseignement qu’elle y délivre relève alors d’une double politique menée sur le front économique mais aussi social. En privilégiant l’analyse de cette entreprise, Emmanuel Quenson fait ici le pari d’éclairer les objectifs, les préoccupations et les stratégies de ses dirigeants pouf mieux souligner leur engagement à l’égard de la formation. Or dans quel contexte le concept d’école d’apprentissage a-t-il pris forme et s’est-il imposé chez Renault ? À quels impératifs une telle politique se devait-elle de répondre ? Quels hommes en ont été les instigateurs ? Quels facteurs ont joué dans l’organisation, le fonctionnement et l’évolution de ce type d’institution ? L’étude d’archives combinée à des témoignages atteste que cette école a connu plusieurs étapes. Son histoire fut celle de compromis successifs, dictés par les débats d’idées comme par les opportunités du moment : les cours dispensés au fil du temps portent la marque d’intentions, d’initiatives et de négociations entre diverses catégories de personnels soucieuses de faire de la formation un enjeu du développement des hommes et des entreprises au xxe siècle. Au-delà de l’analyse, l’ouvrage appelle aussi à la réflexion sur l’actuelle coopération école-entreprise et la décentralisation de la formation professionnelle en France.

The importance of training and education is on the increase. While the production of human capital is seen as a motor for a competitive economy, skills and expertise proof to be necessary for social mobility. Remarkably, in conceiving modern forms of apprenticeship, several mechanisms from the acien régime, seem to return. The difference between public and private initiative is disappearing, education and training is being confused, and in order to acquire generic skills as flexibility, communicability, self-rule, creativity and so on, youngsters have to learn in context. Even for maths, scholars now talk of situated learning. Before the advent of a formal schooling system, training took place on the shop floor, under the roof of a master. The apprentice not only worked but also lived in his masters house and was thus trained and educated at the same time. In cities, this system was formally complemented by an official apprenticeship system, prescribing a minimum term to serve and an obligatory masterpiece for those who wanted to become masters themselves. Traditionally, historians see this as an archaic and backward way of training, yet this book?s aim is to show that is was instead a very flexible and dynamic system, perfectly in tune with the demands of an early modern economy. In order to understand it fully, however, we should differentiate the informal training system organised via a free market of indentures on the one hand and the institutionalised system of craft guilds on the other. In Antwerp, early modern guilds had a project of emancipating their members. They didn't simply produce certain skills, but through a system of quality marks defended the honour of craftsmen. This is the difference with current practices. By representing hands-on skills as superior, guilds supplied a sort of symbolic capital for workers.
