"How do deaf people in different societies perceive and conceive the world around them? Drawing on three years of anthropological fieldwork in Nepali deaf communities, Being and Hearing shows how questions of cultural difference are profoundly shaped by local habits of perception. Beginning with the premise that philosophy and cultural intuition are separated only by genre and pedigree, Peter Graif argues that Nepali deaf communities—in their social sensibilities, political projects, and aesthetics of expression—present innovative answers to the very old question of what it means to be different.From pranks and protests, to diverse acts of love and resistance, to renewed distinctions between material and immaterial, deaf communities in Nepal have crafted ways to foreground the habits of perception that shape both their own experiences and how they are experienced by the hearing people around them.

Josquin des Prez and His Musical Legacy' is the most up-to-date contribution to the research on one of the most important and internationally famous composers of the Renaissance. This monograph offers factual information on the composer as well as insights into his 16th-century and modern reception, a survey of the sources of his music, and a discussion of the thorny issue of authorship. Willem Elders, one of the most distinguished scholars of Josquin's music, also discusses the influence of Gregorian chant as a source of inspiration and explains the various aspects of Josquin's symbolic language. Each individual work (including some of those in the old Josquin edition now considered inauthentic) receives a short discussion of relevant contextual aspects and interesting musical features. Ranges and lengths are given for each work. The style is adapted to the professional musicologist as well as to the music lover' and performer.

In der Renaissance wurde das Altgriechische als Literatursprache für das westliche Europa wieder neu entdeckt und durch Humanisten wie Angelo Poliziano und Markos Musuros in eigenen griechischen Dichtungen propagiert. In ihrer Nachfolge begannen auch deutsche Humanisten griechische Briefe zu schreiben und Verse zu dichten. Als bedeutendster unter den griechischen Dichtern der Renaissance in Deutschland gilt der Dichterphilologe Lorenz Rhodoman (1545?1606), der gleich mehrere größere Hexameterdichtungen veröffentlichte. Eine außergewöhnliche Stellung unter diesen Gedichten nimmt der bisher wenig beachtete Arion ein. Rhodoman bietet in diesem Gedicht eine ausgefeilte Bearbeitung der bei Herodot überlieferten Legende über den lesbischen Sänger Arion. Durch zahlreiche Anleihen aus der antiken Literatur gewinnt Rhodoman der Erzählung neue Seiten ab und nutzt sie, um über Aufgabe und Stellung des Dichters in seiner Zeit zu reflektieren. Ein Höhepunkt seiner Darstellung ist eine ausführliche Schilderung von Ledas Verführung durch Zeus in Schwanengestalt. Stefan Weise legt nun erstmals das im dorischen Dialekt verfasste Epyllion mit deutscher Übersetzung und ausführlicher Einleitung vor.
