Abstract

Musculoskeletal Injuries and Conditions: Assessment and Management is a practical guide to diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions in clinical practice. More comprehensive than a handbook, yet more clinically-focused than a desk reference, this volume is a one-stop guide for clinicians who deal with musculoskeletal disorders and injuries in the practice setting. The book is organized by anatomic region, from neck to toe, and written in outline format. Each chapter concisely presents the basic knowledge that every practitioner needs to have at the ready in the outpatient clinical context. Taking a uniform approach based on isolating symptoms and the location of the pain, the book presents a uniquely practical template for non-operative management of a broad spectrum of musculoskeletal problems. All chapters include epidemiology, anatomy, biomechanics, physical examination, diagnostic studies, and treatment. Flowcharts for differential diagnosis and initial management are provided for chief complaints. Helpful tables, lists, and over 150 anatomic illustrations supplement the text throughout. Given the increasing importance of ultrasound in clinical decision-making at the point of care, a mini-atlas of normal and abnormal findings for common injuries is presented as part of the imaging work-up. Designed to help busy practitioners diagnose and treat musculoskeletal disorders in the clinic or office, this book is an essential resource for physicians in rehabilitation and sports medicine, primary care, orthopedics, and other healthcare professionals who work in outpatient settings. Key Features:Provides a consistent approach to managing common musculoskeletal conditions based on location of painBulleted format and clear heading structure make it easy to find informationMore than 30 flowcharts map out differential diagnosis, diagnostic approach, and initial management strategy for each complaintPacked with useful tables, lists, and over 150 illustrations of surface anatomyIntegrates musculoskeletal ultrasound into the imaging workup, with over 40 normal and abnormal scans to aid in recognizing signature pathologies at the point of carePurchase includes free access to the fully-searchable downloadable e-book with image bank

Abstract

This handbook is an essential guide to diagnosing and managing musculoskeletal problems and injuries in the primary care setting. Derived from Dr. Robert B. Taylor's widely acclaimed Family Medicine: Principles and Practice, Sixth Edition, this convenient, pocket-sized book examines problems of the skeleton and related muscles and joints. Expert contributors provide essential information on musculoskeletal injuries and illnesses geared to the needs of the busy clinician. In addition to common problems such as sprains, strains, and fractures, chapters also cover athletic injuries, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and complex regional pain syndrome. This handy reference is an ideal tool for family physicians and others who provide primary care.

Abstract

In the first book of its kind, noted biomechanists William Whiting and Ronald Zernicke explore the mechanical bases of musculoskeletal injury to better understand causal mechanisms, the effect of injury on musculoskeletal tissues, and how our current knowledge of biomechanics can contribute to injury prevention. Never before has the broad spectrum of injury mechanics been covered so completely in a single book. From introductory biomechanics to detailed examinations of the mechanical aspects of common injuries, Biomechanics of Musculoskeletal Injury provides a solid foundation for in-depth study. The book includes comprehensive information on -the basic biomechanical concepts of force, stress and strain, stiffness, and elasticity; -the mechanics of joints that are subject to disabling injury; -the structure of connective tissues (bone, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments), which are most often involved in musculoskeletal injuries; and -factors such as age, gender, nutrition, and exercise, which affect the musculoskeletal system's response to force. After providing the reader with a fundamental understanding of tissue structure and function, the authors then proceed with detailed explorations of the mechanisms of common injuries, including -inversion ankle sprains, stress fractures, and other lower-extremity injuries; -rotator cuff tears, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other injuries to the upper extremities; and -concussions, intervertebral disc injuries, and other injuries that afflict the head, neck, and trunk. Packed with more than 300 drawings, photos, and tables, Biomechanics of Musculoskeletal Injury is both visually compelling and indispensable as a reference on injury mechanisms.

Abstract

This book is a companion text to Orthopedic Rehabilitation, Assessment, and Enablement by the same author, but can be used independently. Section 1 serves to illustrate through real-life examples the rehabilitation ideas and principles taught in the companion text, ranging from conditions seen daily by the orthopedic surgeon or primary care physician like knee and hip osteoarthritis or plantar fasciitis; through more challenging conditions like hamstring injury rehabilitation or heterotrophic ossification; to recent paradigm shifts in the management of osteoporosis and new technologies like vertebral fracture assessment using state-of-the-art DXA machines, hypergravity stimulation therapy, and many more. In Section 2, the author introduces the reader to the vast number of applications of computers in orthopedic surgery, with special emphasis on the emerging importance of virtual reality in all aspects of orthopedics, ranging from pre-operative planning, pre-operative surgical practice on virtual patients, and virtual wayfinding and navigation; through intra-operative virtual bone structure modeling to enhance accuracy; to, most importantly, post-operative or non-operative rehabilitation of orthopedic conditions using these new computer techniques. The book ends by stressing the importance of telerehabilitation, an increasingly important tool for ensuring that even patients living in remote rural areas can have the chance to participate in rehabilitation guided by a therapist through the use of a virtual environment and teleconferencing.
