Abstract

Muslims in Australia investigates the basis of Australian society's fear of Muslims by tracing their history since the Afghan settlement in 1860. The author investigates how events such as September 11 and Bali terrorist attacks reinforce suspicion and fear, giving an insight into what it means to be a Muslim in contemporary Australia, and how the actions of militant Islamic groups have impacted upon Muslims in general in Western society.

Abstract

The figure of 'the Muslim' is constructed by both Muslim and non-Muslim Australians as incongruent with whiteness, but what of the experience of white Muslim converts, who shift from a 'raceless' white racial positioning to one that is highly racialised? Facing Race explores the lived experiences of thirty-six white Australian converts to Islam, in a national context where Islam is cast in opposition to the white Australian nation. Expanding on previous sociological literature that deals with macro-level racialisation of Muslims through institutions, legislation and policy, social structures and national discourses, author Oishee Alam details how racialisation is reproduced and experienced in everyday interpersonal encounters by white converts, with Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

Abstract

In Covering Muslims, Erik Bleich and A. Maurits van der Veen conclusively show that newspaper articles touching on Muslims are strikingly negative. They use cutting-edge techniques from computational social science to prove that articles that mention Muslims are far more negative than comparable stories related to Catholics, Jews, Hindus, African Americans, Latinos, Mormons, or atheists. The results examine how media outlets may contribute to pervasive Islamophobia, and encourages readers and journalists to "tone check" the media rather than simply accepting negative associations with Muslims or other marginalized groups.

Abstract

The standing of French Muslims is undercut by a predominant and persistent elite public discourse that frames Muslims as failed and incomplete French citizens. This situation fosters the very separations, exclusions, and hierarchies it claims to deplore as Muslims face discrimination in education, housing, and employment. In Constructing Muslims in France, Jennifer Fredette provides a deft empirical analysis to show the political diversity and complicated identity politics of this relatively new population. She examines the public identity of French Muslims and evaluates images in popular media to show how stereotyped notions of racial and religious differences pervade French public discourse. While rights may be a sine qua non for fighting legal and political inequality, Fredette shows that additional tools such as media access are needed to combat social inequality, particularly when it comes in the form of unfavorable discursive frames and public disrespect. Presenting the conflicting views of French national identity, Fredette shows how Muslims strive to gain recognition of their diverse views and backgrounds and find full equality as French citizens. Abstract

Almost a thousand years ago, when most of Europe was just edging out of the Dark Ages, the south of Spain was a brilliant center of world culture, a site of splendor, and a magnet for the talented and ambitious from all around the Mediterranean, the Near East, and beyond. In the days before Isabel and Ferdinand (and the Inquisition), the indigenous culture of Spain was enriched by the artistic, scholarly, technical and commercial contributions of Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Jews and Gypsies. Even under the Catholic Monarchs, these diverse influences continued to add spice to a vibrant society
