In the late nineteenth century, the Mexican government, seeking to fortify its northern borders and curb migration to the United States, set out to relocate "Mexico-Texano" families, or Tejanos, on Mexican land. Each spring during the 1960's and 1970's, a quarter million farm workers left Texas to travel across the nation, from the Midwest to California, to harvest America's agricultural products.
