In the fields of metaphysics and epistemology, ethics and political thought, idealism can generate controversy and disagreement. This title is part of the "Idealism" series, which finds in idealism new features of interest and a perspective which is germane to our own philosophical concerns. Bradley's logical and metaphysical doctrines dominated the philosophical scene at the turn of the 20th century, making him both a key figure in the Absolute Idealist school of that period, and an important catalyst in the development of the realist and pragmatic schools that came after. This collection of essays continues the reappraisal of Bradley, and considering all the major aspects of his work on logic and metaphysics, from his critique of relational thought to his doctrine of immediate experience, makes this text a contribution to the understanding of his thought at the same time as demonstrating its continued relevance to contemporary philosophical concerns.

The essays collected in this volume concern the general question of truthmaking. Most of them also bear upon the metaphysical nature of truthmakers (moments, tropes, property-instances, Aristotelian substances, states of affairs, meanings or essences? ). Taking as their starting point a famous seminal paper by K. Mulligan, P. Simons and B. Smith, as well as D. Armstrong's outstanding contribution to the subject, they offer a fresh assay of the main concepts involved, in order to assess the explanatory value of truthmakers and truthmaker necessitarianism, and explore such delicate issues as contingent truth, bare possibility, tensed propositions, the ontological irreducibility of relations, the subsistence of facts and the epistemic role of negative truths. The collection as a whole provides a comprehensive and thought-provoking survey of the current debate about truthmaking theory and deserves to be read carefully by anyone interested in the relationship between language, thought and reality.

Since Antiquity, the relationship between philosophy and literature has been highly ambivalent. Thus, in Plato’s Republic the poet is opposed to the philosopher, representing emotion and not reason, inspiration and not knowledge. This traditional opposition between the conceptual philosopher and the inspirational poet appears in a new light with the epistemological revalorization of literature observable in particular since the late 18 th century. The crisis of rational philosophy in the wake of the subjectivist Kantian turn and the insight into the contingency of human knowledge lead to the emergence of a new literary philosophical thought which, through its ambiguity, mirrors the epistemological uncertainty of Modernity and the irreductibility of existence to any kind of episteme . The predominance of philosophy is progressively called into question, the boundaries between philosophy and literature fade away or give way to innovative forms of multi-faceted writing, causing the need for a redefinition of both disciplines, namely with regard to the question of whether philosophy or literature is best able to address epistemological, metaphysical, aesthetic, and ethical questions. The present volume tries to give an account of the implications associated with the necessary redefinition of the relationship between philosophy and literature in an interdisciplinary and transversal perspective, revolving around two axes of reflection: The first part deals with the particular epistemological potentialities specific to philosophy and to literature, whereas the second part focuses on the dialogue between philosophy and literature, primarily through the introduction of philosophical reflection into works of literature.

This volume explores the metaphysics of Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714-1762) and its decisive influence on Immanuel Kant. Eleven specially written essays by leading scholars of German philosophy will boost further the growth of interest in Baumgarten as a key figure in the history of European thought.
