When we are born, we are each assigned a gender based on our physical anatomy. But why is it that some people experience such dissonance between their biological sex and their inner identity? Is gender something we are or something we do? Is our expression of gender inborn or does it develop as we grow? Born in South Africa in 1972, Zanele Muholi came to prominence in the early 2000s with photographs that sought to envision black lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and intersex lives beyond deviance or victimhood. Muholi's work challenges hetero-patriarchal ideologies and representations, presenting the participants in their photographs as confident and beautiful individuals bravely existing in the face of prejudice, intolerance, and, frequently, violence. While Muholi's intimate photographs of others launched their international career, their intense self-portraits solidified it. The illustrations include images from the key series Muholi has produced over the past 20 years, as well as never-before-published and recent works. This book, and the exhibition it accompanies, present the full breadth of Muholi's photographic and activist practice. Paul Mpagi Sepuya presents the work of one of the most prominent, up-and-coming photographers working today. Sepuya primarily makes studio photographs of friends, artists, collaborators, and himself, inviting viewers to consider the construction of subjectivity. He challenges and deconstructs traditional portraiture by way of collage, layering, fragmentation, mirror imagery, and the perspective of a black, queer gaze. In contrast to the slick artifice of contemporary portraiture, Sepuya suggests the human element of picture taking--fingerprints, smudges, dust on the surface of mirrors. He also allows glimpses into the studio setting--including tripods, backdrops, lenses, and the photographer himself--encouraging multivalent narrative reads of each image. For Sepuya, photography is a tactile and communal enterprise. Although the creation of artist books has been a long-standing part of his practice, Paul Mpagi Sepuya is the first publication of his work to be released widely, copublished with the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis on the occasion of a major solo exhibition.00Exhibition: Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, USA (17.05-18.08.2019).

Productive Archiving bespreekt een aantal problemen van het archiveren. Het focust met name op de volgende drie kwesties die veelal over het hoofd worden gezien: ten eerste, de vraag van van inclusiviteit of exclusiviteit van bepaalde mensen of categorieën in het archief; ten tweede, het verlies van individualiteit in het archief; en als derde, dat archiveren een vorm van hokjesdenken kan worden, met het plaatsen van specifieke identiteiten binnen een bepaald kader. Het archief vermijden omwille van deze problemen is geen optie, omdat archiveren een menselijke modus is waarmee we onze levens vormgeven, het verleden, het heden en de toekomst ordenen. Wat dit boek suggereert is dat het het beste is om constructieve en creatieve oplossingen te vinden voor bovenstaande kwesties.
