From the successive french invasions of Italy to the declining years of the "Sun King" this volume surveys the architecture, painting and sculpture of two centuries in which france seized the lead in Europe and Paris replaced Rome as the artistic capital. The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in France were an epoch of spectacular creative activity, exemplified by the chateaux of the Loire valley, the work of Mansart, the palace of Versailles, the paintings of Poussin and Claude, and the sculpture of Coysevox which echo the political and cultural importance of France and Louis XIV.
