This open access book explores democratic schools and learning environments globally. The book focuses on a newly developed framework for democratic education. The authors describe existing schools and concept schools—those that are ideas but not in operation. The first section includes the editors’ own journeys. Pillar 1 includes schools that emphasize the open flow of ideas and choices, regardless of their popularity. Pillar 2 maintains that it is impossible to have a high quality education that ignores equity. Chapters explore how many diverse ‘marginalized’ communities experience education and some innovations that hold great promise for inclusion. Pillar 3 provides examples of schools where active engagement, consensus and compromise support the ‘common good.’ Pillar 4 investigates schools which organize students, parents, social institutions and the larger community collaboratively to achieve its goals and to solve theirs and society’s most urgent challenges. Linda F. Nathan brings over four decades of experience in designing schools and nonprofits, including serving as the founding principal of Boston Arts Academy, the city's first public high school for the visual and performing arts. Currently, she supports and mentors educational leaders nationally and internationally and is an Adjunct Lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Harvard University, USA. Jonathan F. Mendonca is the CEO of Shikha Institute of Education & Co-founder of Barefoot Edu Foundation, a non-profit that builds school leadership for the twenty-first century across three states in India. He has served as an educator, educator trainer, institute builder and policy advocate improving the quality of education through human centered systems and policies. Gustavo Rojas Ayala currently serves as the general director for Mexicanos Primero Sinaloa, Mexico, a non-profit that advocates for children’s right to education through research and policy analysis. He has extensive experience leading school intervention projects aimed at increasing educational justice in underprivileged communities in Chile and Mexico.

This open access book presents the final findings from the case studies developed within the Horizon 2020 SMOOTH project Educational Spaces. Passing through Enclosures and Reversing Inequalities through Educational Commons. The overall objective of the project was to understand, develop, and accelerate the potential impact of education on reversing inequalities for active social inclusion of children and young people at risk in Europe, through introducing the emergent paradigm of the “commons” as an alternative value and action system in the field of education (preschools, schools, and after-school programs). SMOOTH critically draws out the implications of the commons for refiguring education and for social change in general, on a footing of equality, sharing, participation, togetherness, caring, and freedom. Universities, research laboratories, municipalities, NGOs, museums, and youth organizations, in different European countries, have worked together to achieve the above aim involving almost 200 educators and teachers, and 800 children, and providing interesting insights and suggestions on how to implement educational commons in many different educational contexts. The target audience comprises policymakers and education leaders, students from Education and Communication degrees, researchers, and educators from both formal and non-formal educational contexts.

"This book is a must-read for teachers, trainers and scholars alike, and for everyone looking for honest information on pitfalls and potentiality when aiming for gender equality in schools." —Dr. Heidi Siller, Medical University of Innsbruck, Switzerland This book explores gender stereotyping and gender inequalities in secondary education in England, Hungary and Italy. The authors highlight the importance of addressing student and teacher attitudes if long-term changes in mindset are desired, as well as the underlying stereotypes that persist and linger in these educational contexts. Promoting a whole-school culture change approach, this book explores views of gender stereotypes from teachers and students concerning subject and career choices, as well as collaborative work with teachers, experts and NGOs in implementing and evaluating gender equality charters. Drawing on extensive research, this book employs an intersectional and cross-country approach: while the authors acknowledge the challenges and opportunities of researching gender equality frameworks across different countries, ultimately these link to the UN Sustainable Development goal of gender equality. Maria Tsouroufli is a Professor of Education at Brunel University London, UK. Her research explores the interface of gender with professional identities and policy implementation in secondary, higher and medical education in European countries. Dorottya Rédai is an independent scholar in gender and education. She has worked as a researcher and trainer at various international projects in gender and education at the Central European University and ELTE University, Hungary. She also works as an activist, a trainer and education specialist in Hungarian NGOs working with issues of gender and sexualities. .

This book highlights the reasons for an urgently needed revision of the current global healthcare setup, discusses the needed mindset for a future of health, and provides a comprehensive development toolset for disruption (and for the needed incremental innovations towards disruption). Today's biomedical and health innovation related research in universities encourages activities that lead to incremental innovations with a relatively low risk of failure. The healthcare industry on the other hand provides tools and devices for established healthcare providers to improve the diagnosis and therapy/ treatment of the patients' health problems. The patient is not in the center of healthcare provision however, and prevention and prediction are not core goals. The current health setup needs to be challenged and disrupted. Disruptions are coming from technologies or processes that lead to a significant (>10x) reduction in cost or price/ performance and that also come with new business models. The need for change, effects of exponential technologies, and the needed shift to prevention and to homecare for health democratization and patient empowerment will be discussed in detail in the first parts of the book. The subsequent sections address several innovation methods with a focus on a novel meta methodology named Purpose Launchpad Health. This is followed by a comprehensive discussion on health entrepreneurship activities and needs. The final section of the book addresses how to train students to become entrepreneurial health innovators, presenting successful curricula and examples of health incubation and accelerator setups. All of the innovation tools presented and used in this book are summarized in the final chapter to help the reader get started planning an entrepreneurial venture. Written by experts from academia and industry, the book covers important basics and best practices, as well as recent developments. Chapters are concise and enriched with key messages, learning objectives and real innovation examples to bridge theory and practice. This book aims to serve as a teaching base for health innovation design and to prepare for health-related entrepreneurial ventures. Readers with medical, biomedical, biotechnology, and health economics backgrounds - and anyone who wants to become a future oriented health innovator or who believes in disruptive approaches - will find this book a useful resource and teaching tool for developing validated products/ services and processes for the future of health.
