La notion de "polyhandicap" apparue en France dans les années 1960 a évolué de façon progressive. Le polyhandicap correspond aux conséquences définitives d'une lésion survenue sur un cerveau en développement. Au niveau fonctionnel, il associe une déficience motrice sévère et une déficience mentale sévère à profonde qui engendrent une restriction extrême de la communication, de l'autonomie et de la mobilité. En lien avec ces difficultés, le polyhandicap implique une complexité et une singularité de l'accompagnement et de la prise en soins de la personne, enfant ou adulte. Chacun nécessite un accompagnement adapté et global tout au long de sa vie, associant soins génériques et spécifiques, éducation, communication, socialisation, aide à la vie quotidienne. Sollicitée par la Caisse nationale de solidarité pour l'autonomie, cette expertise collective fait le bilan des connaissances actuelles dans de nombreux champs relevant de disciplines biomédicales et des sciences humaines et sociales, explorant également des sujets jusqu'à présent peu évoqués comme la maltraitance. Le groupe d'experts propose de nombreuses recommandations visant à améliorer l'accompagnement et le bien-être des personnes en situation de polyhandicap, ainsi que le soutien des familles, des soignants et des aidants. Enfin, cette expertise invite à s'interroger sur le regard que l'on porte sur les personnes polyhandicapées.
