This book brings together discussions about Australian arts policy and funding, outcomes of arts engagement in terms of social inclusion, well-being and education. It presents exemplars of creative programs or case studies that build capacity and lasting impact for communities in urban and regional Australia. This book describes the impact of the arts using narrative case studies. Through this, it develops conceptual understanding and frameworks that can be used to dynamically assess the value and impact of arts engagement across the three types of cultural value: intrinsic value, instrumental value and institutional value. It focuses on how arts engagement creates, supports and extends factors such as well-being, social inclusion and educational achievement. This book provides an innovative examination of the evidence from Australian projects depicting the impact of the arts on a range of indicators and sectors.

This open access edited volume provides theoretical, practical, and historical perspectives on art and education in a post-digital, post-internet era. Recently, these terms have been attached to artworks, artists, exhibitions, and educational practices that deal with the relationships between online and offline, digital and physical, and material and immaterial. By taking the current socio-technological conditions of the post-digital and the post-internet seriously, contributors challenge fixed narratives and field-specific ownership of these terms, as well as explore their potential and possible shortcomings when discussing art and education. Chapters also recognize historical forebears of digital art and education while critically assessing art, media, and other realms of engagement. This book encourages readers to explore what kind of educational futures might a post-digital, post-internet era engender.

This book presents diverse processes of crafting that bring humans, more than-humans and the environment closer to one another and, by doing so, addresses personal and educational developments towards ecological awareness. It discusses the human-material relationship, introduces posthuman theoretical entry points and reflects on the implementation of such theoretical perspectives in education. The practical examples of crafting-with the environment, the material practices and reflections posed in the book, provide insights into possible ways of levelling out human and material hierarchies. They are founded on the authors'own experiences with phenomena they are trying to understand and critically explore. Chapters "Crafting in Dialogue with the Material Environment" and "Soil Laboratory: Crafting Experiments in an Exhibition Setting" are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.se via link.springer.com. "This is a fascinating account of an emerging philosophy of art, in which all artists are seen to be interacting with some aspect of nature. In the interaction the two change each other. The artist learns about changes already occurring in the environment and how they can be researched and used in her/his practice. The many fascinating examples will be of interest to any artist and especially to art and craft teachers and their students, whether in schools or elsewhere, as well as to researchers in art education. The book is likely to appeal to both environmentalists and artists, and to researchers and students of both. Some of the many aspects of nature discussed are shearing sheep and alpaca to card and spin their wool, keeping bees, following animal trails, making pottery from various local soils, exploring an abandoned gravel pit. I highly recommend its use by artists, researchers and teachers of art and craft everywhere." -Professor Michael Parsons, the University of Illinois, Champaign.

This book offers insight into designerly ways of knowing from the perspectives of experts and professionals engaging in diverse forms of design in workplaces and other public domains. It also aids in the understanding of design practices from designers’ viewpoints via case studies. By pursuing a reflective inquiry in their design epistemology (designerly ways of knowing), design praxiology (practices of design), or design phenomenology (forms of designs), self-studies of design practices, and presenting studies of designs, the authors of this book demonstrate how they influence the people and the object of inquiry or design. The case studies presented in this book also illustrate how designers develop their expertise, and provides inspiration for the incorporation of design-thinking and practice in education.

This book presents a selection of case studies of pioneers in arts education who were working in the United Kingdom in the period 1890 to 1950. Focusing on music, drama, and visual arts and crafts, the editors and contributors examine the impact these individuals had on developing innovative approaches to these subject areas and how they drew on perspectives that emphasised the need for children’s self-expression. The chapters offer an analysis of the pioneers’ beliefs and values, with a particular emphasis on their ideological positions about identity, nation, and what constituted ‘good taste’. The book further examines how their ideas were disseminated, in so doing interrogating the concept of ‘influence’ in educational theory and practice. John Howlett is Lecturer in Education at Keele University, UK, where he is also Programme Director for undergraduate education. He is the author of Progressive Education: A Critical Introduction (Bloomsbury, 2013) and Edmond Holmes and Progressive Education (Routledge, 2017). Amy Palmer is Senior Lecturer in Early Childhood Studies at the University of Roehampton, UK. She co-edited, with Jane Read, British Froebelian Women from the Mid-Ninetieth to the Twenty-First Century (Routledge, 2021).
