"The book investigates multiple aspects of the patterning of Determiner Phrases (DP) in Bangla and develops a set of proposals to model the underlying syntactic structure of such elements. A broad aspect of this book is to re-assert the existing argument in the DP literature that DPs appear to share a parallel structure to the clauses. The book in particular shows that the Bangla DP-internal phrasal movements are instances of discourse driven phenomena. This further leads to project a fine structure of nominal left-periphery in the Bangla DP, that has been argued in the background of the cross-linguistic evidence drawn from Gungbe, Greek, Albanian, and Russian languages. The central theoretical discussion of the book primarily revolves around the key conceptual domains of adjective movement, ellipsis, definiteness, and wh-movement in the Bangla DP"--

Attestée, de manière métalinguistique ou non, dès le XVe siècle, par le biais également des termes déterminer, déterminé et indéterminé, la notion de détermination est employée tantôt dans la définition de l'adverbe, tantôt dans l'analyse du temps verbal, pour distinguer passé simple et passé composé, tantôt encore pour décrire des relations de dépendance morphologique, tantôt enfin dans le cadre de la sémantique nominale et référentielle. En grammaire, où se croisent acceptions héréditaires et empruntées, la notion renvoie à une opération de spécification dont les agents sont les déterminants. La tradition chaotique du terme les verse tantôt parmi les classes de mots (adjectifs déterminatifs, non qualificatifs, pour la grammaire scolaire, puis déterminants depuis Wagner et Pinchon (1962), à partir du determiner de Bloomfield (1933)), tantôt parmi les fonctions, tantôt un peu dans les deux. Les différentes théories redessinent les territoires et font voyager les items au gré de la place qui leur est réservée dans leur système. Les contributions de ce volume visent à approcher et à éclairer davantage, parfois d'une lumière nouvelle, la notion de détermination, qui est encore loin d'être parfaitement circonscrite.

This article explores definiteness as expressed by the determiner system of Malagasy. In particular, noun phrases with and without an overt determiner are compared in terms of familiarity, uniqueness, and other semantic notions commonly associated with definiteness. It is shown that the determiner does not uniformly signal definiteness (as typically understood) and that bare noun phrases can be interpreted as either definite or indefinite. The determiner instead signals the familiarity of the discourse referent of the DP and the absence of a determiner signals a non-familiar DP. In certain syntactic positions, however, where the determiner is either required or banned, the interpretation of DPs is underdetermined.
