In three sections, the book covers the films of women directors, television shows featuring women in lead roles, and the representational struggles of women in cultural context, with a special focus on changes in the transformative power of narratives and images across genres and platforms. This collection derives from the editors’ multi-year experiences as scholars and practitioners in the field of film and television. It is an effort that aims to describe and understand female agencies and subjectivities across screen narratives, gather scholars from around the world to generate timely discussions, and inspire fellow researchers and practitioners of film and television. Diğdem Sezen is a lecturer at Teesside University, School of Computing, Engineering and Digital Technologies, Department of Communications, Media and Arts, UK. She holds a Ph.D. from Istanbul University, Turkey. Feride Çiçekoğlu holds a Ph.D. in architecture from University of Pennsylvania, USA. Her stint in prison during the military junta of 1980 in Turkey was the inspiration for her first novella, which she later adapted to screen and used as a springboard to build a second academic career in film. Aslı Tunç is a professor of media studies and communication in the Department of Media at Istanbul Bilgi University, Turkey. She holds a Ph.D. in media and communications from Temple University, USA. Ebru Thwaites Diken is an assistant professor in the Department of Film and Television at İstanbul Bilgi University, Turkey. She holds a a PhD in Sociology from Lancaster University, UK.

While the idea of women who stay at home and men who dominate the streets may seem outdated, binary considerations of gender, space, and power still proliferate in contemporary cinema. This open access book adopts a fluid approach to space designed to accommodate wilful, affirmative, and imaginative perspectives of gender on screen. Through close analysis, or micro-analysis, of Messidor (Alain Tanner, 1979), Vendredi Soir (Claire Denis, 2002), Wadjda (Haifaa Al-Mansour, 2012), and Head-On (Fatih Akin, 2004), this book looks for light, textures, rhythms, movement, and sound that give shape to affirmative forms, forms that contribute to rewriting bodies and spaces—such as cars, homes, and city streets—that reject traditional gender and power structures. Wilful women drive this book forward, through movement and pauses, imagination and desire, persistence and dissimulation, eroticism, performance and abjection.

This book focuses on a representative group of contemporary Chinese female celebrities including actors, directors, writers and reporters, notably personalities such as Liu Xiaoqing, Hong Huang, Chai Jing and the most sought after young generation actors, Yang Mi and Guan Xiaotong. It analyses the on- and off- screen roles of these famous Chinese women, and the cultural, gender and social impact and significance embedded in them, whilst highlighting controversial social and cultural concerns and debates in contemporary China. The book furthers the understanding of the role played by contemporary female celebrities who are considered as social, cultural and feminist icons in present-day China, as reflected in their work, careers and private lives, and whose experiences help to understand Chinese women’s attitudes towards key issues such as career trajectories, marriage and family, gender identity, social changes, civil debates and political transformations, all of which are at the center of societal transformation in China. .
