Este libro es el resultado de una serie de conferencias que se realizaron en el curso 2001-2002 en el marco del Seminario de Investigación del Programa de Doctorado en Antropología Social y Cultural de la Universitat de Barcelona. El texto constituye una muestra no exhaustiva de la diversidad temática de las investigaciones que se están desarrollando actualmente en antropología social y cultural, y de ahí el título de Antropología en un mundo en transformación. A pesar de la diversidad temática, el lector encontrará en este libro una serie de cuestiones básicas que surgen durante el desarrollo de una investigación antropológica: desde las consideraciones generales sobre cómo plantearse la elaboración de una tesis de doctorado hasta los resultados concretos obtenidos en una investigación, pasando por la definición del objeto de estudio y las estrategias metodológicas, así como la aplicación de técnicas específicas de recogida y análisis de información. Esta diversidad tanto de temas como de aspectos de la investigación tratados convierte la lectura de este libro en un ejercicio recomendable, sobre todo, para aquellos estudiantes de tercer ciclo que se inicien en el campo de la investigación antropológica.

This book builds on a critique of Slavoj Zizek’s work to outline a new theory of psychoanalytic rhetoric. It turns to Zizek because not only is he one of the most popular intellectuals in the world, but, this book argues, his discourse is shaped by a set of unconscious rhetorical processes that also determine much of contemporary politics, culture, and subjectivity. Just as Aristotle argued that the three main forms of persuasion are logos (reason), pathos (emotion), and ethos (authority), Samuels describes each one of these aspects of communication as related to a fundamental psychoanalytic concept. He also turns to Aristotle’s work on theater to introduce a fourth form of rhetoric, catharsis, which is the purging of feelings of fear and pity. Adding a strong voice to current psychoanalytic debate, this book will be of value to all scholars and students interested in both the history and modern developments of psychoanalytic theory. Robert Samuels has doctorates in Psychoanalysis and English. He teaches advanced writing and rhetoric at the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. He is the author of fifteen books, including Freud for the Twenty-First Century.

This book is for university students, with at least a mid-intermediate level of English. It can be used as part of an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course, either alone or with the companion volume Writing an Academic Paper in English. The chapters are independent so that EAP teachers and students can choose those sections that best fit their needs. This means that a course could range from a minimum of 20 hours, up to 60 hours or more. There is an introductory chapter that includes what role academics play in today’s world, where success is not just measured in terms of paper output and presentations at conferences, but also in involvement interdisciplinary projects and supporting society at large. Each chapter covers either a particular skill (e.g. preparing a script, pronunciation, visuals, how to begin and end a presentation) or the particular purpose of a specific moment in a presentation. For example, the final slide is designed not just to conclude and thank the audience, but is an opportunity to reach out for collaborations and assistance. The aims of each part of a presentation are also highlighted by comparisons with non-academic situations where similar skills are required. The course is highly practical with screenshots from real presentations given by PhD students. It is also designed to be fun to use.
