Abstract

With the emergence of a diverse public school studentpopulation, existing literature affirms the existence of a Black teachershortage and the low representation of teachers of color in U.S. publicschools. Although there are over 3 million public school teachers, AfricanAmerican teachers only comprise approximately 8 percent of the public schoolteaching workforce. In fact, the education field is dominated by White,middle-class teachers, particularly, White female teachers. While the retention of all teachers of color is a pertinentissue, an examination of Black female teachers who can assist in diversifyingthe teaching field is timely and warranted. Despite Black females' historic role in public education and that teaching is a female-dominated profession,Black female teachers represent only 7.7 percent of the American teachingforce, while students of color represent almost 49 percent of the total studentenrolment. This important, timely, and provocative book placesrecruitment and retention of Black female teachers at the center. Thecontributions address not only the recruitment of Black female teachers butalso discuss mechanisms necessary to retain them. Thus, this collectionnot only focuses on recruiting and retaining Black female teachers for the sakeof having their representation in schools; rather, authors consider some of theimplicit (and overt) nuances that these teachers experience in schools across theUnited States.

Abstract

Behind the controversies that have marked the history of the idea of Economic Constitution emerges the highly political issue of the room for manoeuvre left to public authorities in the economic sphere. The notion thus encapsulates a fundamental tension: between democracy and rule of law, which model of legal ordering of the economy should prevail? From physiocrats to neo-liberals, from the Weimar Republic to European integration, from national constitutions to Global Governance, this collective book invites us to explore the genealogy of the controversial concept of Economic Constitution. The result of this interdisciplinary dialogue is a comprehensive reflection on the legal and political issues at stake in the current constitutionalization of the market order in Europe. Contributors are: Philippe Steiner, Guillaume Grégoire, Hugues Rabault, Peter C. Caldwell, Thomas Biebricher, Werner Bonefeld, Serge Audier, Vincent Valentin, Pieter van Cleynenbreugel, Xavier Miny, Frédéric Marty, Claire Mongouachon, Hans-Wolfgang Micklitz, Francesco Martucci, Michael Wilkinson, Hjalte Lokdam, Susanna Maria Cafaro, Peter Lindseth, Cristina Fasone, Pierre Nihoul, François Colly, Peter-Christian Müller-Graff, Tony Prosser, Damien Piron, Mahmoud Mohamed Salah, Stephen Gill, Thibault Biscahie, Sebastien Adalid, and Christian Joerges. Educational equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice are widely considered to be the most important civil rights challenge of the 21st century. Many HBCUs began in the 1800s as institutions to prepare Black teachers to teach in segregated America. Although their focus has expanded since their critical beginnings, HBCUs remain significant producers of African American teachers. Today, as the United States grapples with educational disparities, lack of diversity among education professionals, systemic racism, and the recent politically-inspired assaults on Critical Race Theory, we need HBCU leadership in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade education more than ever. Black College Leadership in PK–12 Education amplifies the research and perspectives of HBCU leaders, including four HBCU education deans, on how HBCUs help school districts optimize education for Black preschool, elementary and secondary students. Specific topics include HBCU teacher preparation, building HBCU and K–12 partnerships, culturally responsive teaching, inclusive assessment practices, and HBCU leadership in STEM education. This book is ideal for schoolteachers and administrators who want to use HBCUs as a resource to improve education, as well as HBCU leaders who want to work more effectively with local school districts.

Abstract

"Drawing upon the theoretical frameworks of Beauboeuf-Lafontant (2002), Collins (2009), Crenshaw (1991), and Dillard (2012), this volume makes a case for centering the voices and experiences of Black women in the protection and educational uplift of Black children. While examinations of how Black educators articulate and enact a need to protect Black students from racialized harm exist (McKinney de Royston et. al., 2020), this book is a collection of autoethnographic narratives from Black mother educators who work at the intersections of their personal and professional identities to protect Black children. Intersectionality allows us to look at the nexus of our identities in regards to race, gender and occupation-- as Black, women and educators. Our goal for this volume was to bring together scholars who can support theorizing the intersectionality of our identities as Black mothers and educators, particularly its influence on our pedagogical practices and the safekeeping of Black children. This volume explicates stories of motherwork from Black mother educators whose professional spaces span K-12 to higher education contexts. Collectivity, this volume expounds upon the dimension of "protector" within the literature on Black women teachers"--
