As architect Fuminori Nousaku's first solo publication, Contemporary Architect's Concept Series 29 probes the young architect's mind for architectural methods for 1) residential and urban development that factors in ecosystems and the global environment, 2) off-grid homes powered by solar energy, 3) architecture and landscaping that restore soil health, 4) ecological design that plans for circulation of materials from production to disposal, and more. Nousaku has focused his attention on the myriad building materials used in developing cityscapes. He has meanwhile attracted attention himself for disassembling, repairing, and relocating the 40-year-old, tile-roofed Takaoka Guesthouse (2013), as well as for taking the urban commodity that is a pre-owned home, opening it up with numerous holes--hence the name Holes in the House: Urban Wild Ecology--and continuing to rebuild it in a life-giving layout as a mixed-use residence-cum-office (2017). With these works and more, Fuminori Nousaku strives to make architecture a new kind of ecosystem that incorporates an extensive range of design requirements on the topics of land and its history, materials and resources, lifestyles, and the housing industry and social system.

This book by architect Toshiharu Naka establishes specific concepts based on two systems: a “Social Cycle”, or a cycle coexisting with small economies, and an “Ecological Cycle”, or a cycle of natural energy and resources. He illustrates his macroscopic idea to integrate the two through his architectural works. Naka’s detailed speculation includes the live/work house, places for spontaneous activity, landscapes of grouped houses, realising possibilities for fusion, and dynamic programme theory. He proposes intermediate areas as spaces for interaction with the outside, giving visibility to the social cycle, or as thermal environments, allowing the ecological cycle to become visible as well.
