From 52 propositions the book explores glocal urbanity as a new modernity derived from the Axial Age. It proposes to understand the city also as a socio-technological process. Integrate concepts such as Complexity, Urban Metabolism and Second Order Cybernetics into our disciplinary corpus. Urbanistically translate the new Glocal Transregionalism that emerges in step with the progressive dissolution of the Westphalian Nation-State, and definitely to promote a more disruptive urbanism formed by tangible values and intangible virtues that is capable of overcoming the demagogic-populist currents that today besiege us.

The Artificial Intelligence fueled transition toward smart cities and network societies has tremendous impact on the future of humanity. The current narrative of smart cities and data enabled urban systems totally leaves out the components of human experience, feelings, emotions and real human relationships. However, what makes a city smart, is the degree and quality of human connections and social cohesion that individuals feel. Cities are more than just objects, buildings and fixed entities. They are about people and networks that encompass system of life as a whole. In turn, people’s behaviour shapes sustainability, resilience and inclusivity of the future of cities. This Manifesto for the future design of smart cities explores the existing ethos of practice of smart cities around the world. Combining Eastern philosophies of change and a Western analytical scientific lens with the notion of the Internet of People and the Internet of We, in parallel to the utilitarian Internet of Things, Dr. Shima Beigi calls for a paradigm shift in this rapidly growing area of smart cities. Spontaneity, empathy, love, resilience, inclusivity, sustainability, diversity, harmony, synergy, and similar higher level states of being, are those mystical and intangible parts of system of existence, humanity included, that cannot be manufactured, programmed, and engineered for by any kind(s) of artificial intelligence simply by virtue of being artificial. 'Mindful smart cities' applies the analytical lens of Mindfulness Engineering™ and its interactive design toolkit. The main aim of its design protocol is focused on making people, places and interfaces mindfully smart.

The MIT based SENSEable City Lab under Carlo Ratti is one of the research centers that deal with the flow of people and goods, but also of refuse that moves around the world. Experience with large-scale infrastructure projects suggest that more complex and above all flexible answers must be sought to questions of transportation or disposal. This edition, edited by Dietmar Offenhuber and Carlo Ratti, shows how Big Data change reality and, hence, the way we deal with the city. It discusses the impact of real-time data on architecture and urban planning, using examples developed in the SENSEable City Lab. They demonstrate how the Lab interprets digital data as material that can be used for the formulation of a different urban future. It also looks at the negative aspects of the city-related data acquisition and control. The authors address issues with which urban planning disciplines will work intensively in the future: questions that not only radically and critically review, but also change fundamentally, the existing tasks and how the professions view their own roles.

Landscape architecture is the profession designing with urban ecosystems. It’s time for architects and urbanists, commissioners and the building industry to join in, because nature inclusive design leads to better quality of life for all beings.Urban ecosystems are extensive and improving them is a complex task. But many small projects together do have a positive impact. This insight made Maike van Stiphout decide to create this guide for city builders. The knowledge acquired through the years is crystallised into a compact, practical theory in which you follow three rules to make a nature inclusive project. An easy start for beginners. And since we have only just begun to build for biodiversity, Maike van Stiphout calls it the first guide. Who’s next?
