Abstract

The spectacular story of Shenzhen is well-known: the former fishing village became a New Town in 1980 when the central Chinese government gave it the status of Special Economic Zone. Shenzhen soon became a metropolis and a prototype for both economic and urban reform within China. Now the time has come for Shenzhen that is an inevitable part of the life cycle of any fast growing New Town in the world: the city needs to explore its own identity anew and define the next phase of development. Shenzhen has been raising eyebrows for years: its fast urbanization process causes many social and ecological problems such as a massive floating population, a shortage of land and water resources, and deterioration of the environment. What will be the next step?00This book will provide both a detailed overview of Shenzhen’s current planning issues and illustrate viable solutions, by authoritative theorists and designers from China and the Netherlands, including Huang Weiwen, Doreen Liu, Tat Lam, Li Jinkui, Arnold Reijndorp, Ronald Wall and Linda Vlassenrood.

Abstract

There is growing national and international interest in the work of Frank Havermans (b. Breda, 1967). He constructs complex spatial structures using simple means, without the intervention of an engineer or building contractor. His work stems from a combined fascination with architectonic space and architectural structure. Alongside this fascination, materiality and the production process play prominent roles in his work. His sphere of activity embraces the whole spectrum of architecture, from furniture and interior to installations, buildings and large-scale urbanism.

Abstract

Women in Architecture sheds light on how women in all their different roles contribute to architecture, from the past to the present. Despite the essential and varied contributions of women, the narrative surrounding architecture remains deeply rooted in masculinity. Nonetheless, women have played crucial roles throughout architectural history. This publication sheds light on the reasons behind the absence of women in archives and publications, and how that exclusion continues to perpetuate the invisibility of women in architecture today. By bringing together these stories, the publication adds a crucial chapter to the history of architecture in the Netherlands and advocates for greater diversity in the current architectural discourse. Women in Architecture is the first publication in the Documents and Histories series, a series that contributes to a more complete history. This publication is a first exploration of diversity in architecture and features contributions from several experts, including Catja Edens, who reflects on the various roles of women in architecture. Lara Schrijver's essay focuses on the need for collaboration rather than rivalry within design practice, while Indira van 't Klooster develops a vocabulary for multi-voiced analyses. Setareh Noorani provides insights into alternative and inclusive ways of archiving. Other contributors to this publication include Florencia Fernández Cardoso, Hilde Heynen, Rixt Hoekstra, Ellen van Kessel, María Novas Ferradás, Erica Smeets-Klokgieters, Fátima Pombo, Lidewij Tummers, and Linda Vlassenrood. The book also sheds light on the lives and work of Riné Boerée, Wilhelmina Jansen, Ada Kuiper-Struyk, Elisabeth de Lestrieux, Jacoba Mulder, Manon Peyrot, and Guus Schreuder-Gratama, who are often overlooked in architectural history.
