The Olympic Park in Munich is one of the most famous projects of the landscape architect Günther Grzimek (1915-1996), yet his entire oeuvre has proved to be pioneering and timeless. He advocated for a new form of urban green space in Germany, a "demokratisches Grün" (democratic green space) that embraces public participation. Grzimek's biography offers a wellspring of new discoveries and traverses the history of modern Germany. His collaborations with famous architects, town planners, and designers-including Otl Aicher, who developed the basic outline of this volume together with Grzimek in the 1980's-produced major innovations in landscape design that are still unfluential today.

"This volume discusses spatial design implications of technical and transport infrastructure. The authors look at projects of various scales - from skate parks to urban highways - in many different cities - Mexico City, New York, London, Paris, Zurich, Seattle, Barcelona, Stockholm, Sao Paulo, Antwerp. They demonstrate that infrastructure generates its own category of urban realm."--P.[4] of cover.

City and country—these terms are generally regarded as opposites. The urban, with its constructed spaces and places, is separated from nature, with its mature landscapes and clearings. Yet, today’s landscape architecture explores both of them as a single system, making it possible to see the mutual dependency of these supposedly opposing developments. In view of massive changes in ecological systems, as well as increasing migration and the spread of unplanned human settlements, landscape architecture is also being confronted with global challenges. This catalogue is a plea to redefine the discipline’s position. Innovative but complex approaches are presented in examples of specific projects from all over the world. Landscape architecture today commits itself to the spatial systems that will shape tomorrow’s society.
