Hillman presents a fascinating account of the role that women played during the Catholic Reformation in France. Using probate inventories from aristocratic residences and private correspondence, she reconstructs the devotional practices of a network of powerful women showing how they reconciled Catholic piety with their roles as part of an aristocratic elite. This challenges the view that the Catholic Reformation was an exclusively male concern. It will be of interest to those researching the history of early modern devotional culture, the Catholic/Counter Reformation and early modern European elites.

Sexuality and aging: Clinical perspectives Jennifer Hillman There are two primary stereotypes of sexuality and aging. One is found in the prowling cougars and elder Romeos of TV and film. The other is lonely, ill, depressed, and above all, sexless. The truth mainly lies between these extremes, reflecting a diversity of experience and behaviors to match a growing and dynamic senior population. Sexuality and Aging: Clinical Perspectives assembles the most up-to-date information on the spectrum of middle-aged and older people’s sex-related concerns, from HIV to ED, from body image problems to dating after 50. This timely volume equips professionals to answer questions more accurately and help clients navigate the multiple changes and challenges that accompany aging. In-depth analysis, empirical findings, and case studies offer a clear picture of what clinicians can expect as the baby-boom population grows older. And the author provides helpful advice for clinicians seeking a comfort level for discussing sexual matters in practice. Included in the coverage: An overview of sexuality among middle-aged and older adults including historical approaches and current research methodologies. Specific chapters focusing upon men’s and women’s concerns. The impact of prescription and over the counter medicines on sexual function. "This volume is an edited collection of original essays on spiritual travel in medieval and early modern Europe. Pilgrimage was a central feature of medieval and early modern Christianity. But holy travel was not only a physical act, it was also an interior disposition and a spiritual process. From at least the late Antique period, the life of a Christian was understood allegorically as a journey towards heaven. Also, many people could not travel: enclosed orders of monks and nuns, men and women with responsibilities tying them to localities, the sick and frail. Virtual travel was instead their recourse to the sacred sites. Thus spiritual pilgrimage, instead of or alongside physical pilgrimage, became prominent in medieval Europe and survived the Reformation in both Protestant and Catholic traditions. These essays show that this experience took many forms: a lively imagining of a journey with holy people or to holy places; an 'out-of-body' experience such as the revelations of St Bridget of Sweden; guided journeys; meditations upon holy places such as Jerusalem; and travel in reconstructed landscapes, from the Monti Sacri reconstitutions to convent churches. The volume includes an historiographical introduction by the editors and nine case studies of spiritual journeys, drawn from across the late medieval and early modern periods and from different regions of Europe"--

This report by the Council on Foreign Relations explores the evolving landscape of international trade subsidies, focusing on the historical and contemporary challenges posed by industrial subsidies. The authors, Jennifer A. Hillman and Inu Manak, analyze the inadequacies of current international trade rules, particularly those of the World Trade Organization, in curbing the use of subsidies by countries like China. The report highlights the recent shift in U.S. policy under the Biden administration, which has embraced substantial subsidies to accelerate clean energy transition and compete with China. It calls for reforms to international subsidy rules to balance legitimate uses with the prevention of harmful competition. The authors propose a framework similar to the WTO Agreement on Agriculture, aiming to introduce caps and transparency to manage subsidies effectively. This work is intended for policymakers, trade experts, and scholars interested in foreign policy and international trade.
