Studies on everyday life are centred on housing conditions, eating and drinking, clothing, hygiene and medical care, professions, land and sea communications, and generally production and consumption. The material range occupies a broad area here ; besides the object-related specificity one can frequently denote also a mental function as carrier and/or symbol of concepts or values. Therefore, the international symposium held in Cambridge 2001, which counted the Viennese Institute of Byzantine Studies among its organizers, placed "well-being" as a topic in its material, legal and philosophical-religious components wishing to position it as a multiform and interdisciplinary common venture. The twenty-three contributions, which - preceded by an introduction to the general state of research and future perspectives - from the publication of symposium's proceedings, treat accordingly among other things aspects such as town planning, perfumes in the secular and church sphere, magical practices and holy physicians, clothing as status symbols and forms of abundance and shortage in the Byzantine diet.

Cultures of learning and practices of education in theMiddle Ages are drawing renewed attention, and recentapproaches are questioning the traditional boundaries ofinstitutional and intellectual history. The volume assemblescontributions on both Byzantine and Latin learned culture, and aims to locate medieval scholars in their religious andpolitical contexts instead of studying them in a frameworkof ‘schools’. Eleven contributions on eastern and westernscholars offer complementary perspectives on scholars andtheir work, discussing the symbolic and discursiveconstruction of religious and intellectual authority, practices of networking and adaptations of knowledgeformations.

This volume presents the results of a scholarly meeting which focused on the patronage of women in the Byzantine Empire. In their scope, the articles address broadly not only the founding or re-founding of churches and monasteries, but also their rich decoration, as well as numerous smaller donations. In spite of increased attention to gender research in recent years, a comparative treatment of the legal and economic potentiel that women in Byzantium could exercise in order to exert independent influence has been lacking; thus a gender-specific viewpoint for the volume was intentionally chosen.
