Sauver, guérir ou du moins faire du bien, tels sont les mots d’ordre, souvent explicites, placés au cœur des projets littéraires contemporains. Refusant de devenir un jeu postmoderne ou une simple dilection d’arrière-garde, la littérature française d’aujourd’hui a l’ambition de prendre soin du moi, mais aussi des individus fragiles, des oubliés de la grande histoire, des communautés ravagées et de nos démocraties inquiètes. En s’intéressant de manière critique à cet imaginaire collectif thérapeutique où la culture, en place de la religion et d’un projet politique, veut réparer nos conditions de victimes, servir à notre « développement personnel », favoriser notre propension à l’empathie, corriger les traumatismes de la mémoire individuelle ou du tissu social, cet essai propose une réflexion inaugurale sur la littérature française du XXIe siècle

Loin d'être une essence, la littérature est avant tout une idée. Cet essai entend en faire l'histoire, de l'apparition du mot et de la naissance du concept au tout début du XIXe siècle à ses étonnantes métamorphoses contemporaines.Car le territoire de littérature connait aujourd'hui une formidable extension : de la littérature définie par son désintéressement, son autonomie, aux écritures contemporaines volontiers sociales et politiques, du sacre de l'auteur aux amateurs de fanfictions, du souci unique du style à la non-fiction, de l'apologie de l'originalité à l'exigence de l'enquête, de la solitude du créateur aux littératures de terrain, du roman romanesque aux écritures du monde non humain, du culte du texte aux écritures hors du livre, du tropisme occidental à la world littérature, d'une conception linguistique à une approche informée par l'anthropologie culturelle et les sciences de la nature.Que s'est-il passé ? Pourquoi avons-nous longtemps identifié la littérature à l'art pour l'art ? Quels chemins a emprunté ensuite notre idée de la littérature, après s'être définie par son inutilité et son intransitivité, pour nous apparaître désormais comme une pratique communicationnelle et relationnelle, à la fonction éthique et même démocratique ? C'est en faisant la généalogie longue et complexe de l'idéologie esthétique qui a dominé la littérature moderne et ses institutions, en interrogeant ses valeurs supposées universelles, en questionnant sa religion du texte et ses manières de produire des distinctions, en mettant en perspective les études littéraires qui l'ont accompagné, que l'on peut comprendre une conception de la littérature comme un concept ouvert, extensif et inclusif, comme un moyen et non comme une fin
