Author John F. Donahue ranges from the extravagant banquets of the emperors to the feasts of the cities and towns of the Western Empire during the first four centuries of the Common Era. Taking as a starting point the development of feasting in ancient Greece then Rome, the study considers the kinds of foods offered at feasts, the social identities of benefactors and beneficiaries, the importance of venue, and a discussion of the cost and frequency of such banquets. This study is unique in that it relies on over three hundred Latin honorary inscriptions to recreate the ancient Roman feast. John F. Donahue is Assistant Professor of Classics at the College of William and Mary.

"Interest in food and drink as an academic discipline has been growing significantly in recent years. This sourcebook is a unique asset to many courses on food as it offers a thematic approach to eating and drinking in antiquity. For classics courses focusing on ancient social history to introductory courses on the history of food and drink, as well as those offerings with a strong sociological or anthropological approach this volume provides an unparalleled compilation of essential source material. The chronological scope of the excerpts extends from Homer in the Eighth Century BCE to the Roman emperor Constantine in the Fourth Century CE. Each thematic chapter consists of an introduction along with a bibliography of suggested readings. Translated excerpts are then presented accompanied by an explanatory background paragraph identifying the author and context of each passage. Most of the evidence is literary, but additional sources - inscriptional, legal and religious - are also included"--

"The adage that an army "marches on its stomach" finds renewed emphasis in this collection of essays. Focusing on military diet and supply from Homer through the Roman Empire, Diet and Logistics in Greek and Roman Warfare explains regional dietary options and reassesses traditional notions of "provisioning" while exploring topics ranging from strategy and subterfuge to trade and terror. Through fresh insights drawn from current research and excavation spanning the Greco-Roman world, contributors confirm how providing food and drink for soldiers was critical to every army's success and survival. This volume stimulates reevaluation of ancient militaries and encourages new research. Contributors are: Jeremy Armstrong, Bret Devereux, Fernando Echeverria, Paul Erdkamp, Eduardo Garcia-Molina, Marc Kleijwegt, Kelsey Koon, Sarah Murray, Nikolas Overtoom, Thomas Rose, Matthew Sears, Gregory Viggiano"--
