H. P. Berlage's importance as an architect of international standing is beyond dispute, his Beurs and "Plan-Zuid" in Amsterdam being milestones in the history of dutch architecture. The dominant position of these in Berlage's oeuvre has tended to obscure his many other significant contributions to Amsterdam's architectural heritage however. This book, compiled by Manfred Bock - one of the foremost authorities on Berlage - Jet Collee and Hester Coucke, provides an extensively illustrated "catalogue raisonné" of his Amsterdam projects, including those never realized, and shows his profound significance for an architecture struggling to break free from nineteenth-century traditionalism.
