Destination Paradise: Among the Jihadists in the Maldives by Francesca Borri explores the unexpected intersection of Islamic extremism and the tourism-driven paradise of the Maldives. The book delves into the social and political dynamics of the Maldives, revealing how this seemingly idyllic location has become a hotspot for jihadist recruitment, with a disproportionately high number of foreign fighters per capita. Borri, a war reporter, provides a firsthand account of the complexities and contradictions within Maldivian society, where Western tourists often overlook the underlying tensions. The narrative captures the perspectives of locals and the broader geopolitical implications, offering insights into the global reach of jihadist movements. The book is intended for readers interested in contemporary global issues, geopolitics, and the socio-cultural aspects of Islamic extremism.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the First International Conference on Digital Libraries, DELOS 2007, held in Pisa, Italy, in February 2007. The 33 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement for inclusion in the book. The papers are organized in topical sections on similarity search, architectures, personalization, interoperability, evaluation, miscellaneous, preservation, video data management, 3D objects, and peer to peer.

Digital libraries represent the meeting point of a large number of technical - eas within the ?eld of informatics, i.e., information retrieval, document m- agement, information systems, the Web, image processing, arti?cial intelligence, human- computerinteraction,mass-storagesystems,andothers.Moreover,d- ital libraries draw upon other disciplines beyond informatics, such as library sciences, museum sciences, archives, sociology, psychology, etc. However, they constitute a relatively young scienti?c ?eld, whose life spans roughly the last 15 years. During these years the DELOS Network of Excellence on Digital - braries (http://www.delos.info) has represented a constant presence aiming to contribute to the consolidation of the ?eld. The activities ofDELOS startedmanyyearsago, with the DELOSWorking Group at the end of the 1990s, and the DELOS Thematic Network, under the Fifth Framework Program, from 2001 to 2003. Since the beginning, the main objective of DELOS has been to advance the state of the art in the ?eld of digitallibrariesbycoordinatingthee?ortsofthemajorEuropeanresearchteams conducting activities in the major ?elds of interest. EveryyearDELOSorganizesthe All-Tasksmeeting, the annualappointment of the DELOS community where the scienti?c results achieved during the p- vious year are presented. Instead of the usual status reports from the various DELOSTasks,in 2006it wasdecidedto issueaCallfor Papers, soliciting papers reporting the scienti?c achievements of the DELOS members during 2006, and to organize a conference. The ?rst DELOS conference was held during February 13-14, 2007, at the Grand Hotel Continental in Tirrenia, Pisa, Italy.
