Abstract

Early modern Amsterdam was an ultra-modern city, laid out conforming to the triple demand of functionality, beauty and profit ; a city that takes a unique place in European urban history because of its location, design, and impressive scale. Making of a Metropolis tells the story of Amsterdam becoming one of the largest cities in Europe in the seventeenth century. Amsterdam was one of the cradles of capitalism, but at the same time one of the most meticulously planned cities in the world. After the Fall of Antwerp in 1585, Amsterdam took over its position as the main trade hub in northwestern Europe. The city grew rapidly to become the central harbour town – and one of the largest European cities. The boom in harbours and industry went hand in hand with an explosive population growth. This resulted in two huge city extensions in 1613 and 1663, multiplying the territory of Amsterdam by five. Around the old town, the now famous ring of canals was constructed. Beyond this residential zone mixed-use and industrial districts were laid out, with a series of harbour islands along the borders of the IJ.Early modern Amsterdam was an ultra-modern city, laid out conforming to the triple demand of functionality, beauty and profit ; a city that takes a unique place in European urban history because of its location, design, and impressive scale. This book deals with the question how Amsterdam’s administration managed to realize these immense projects from the viewpoints of urban design, infrastructure, logistics, and finance. The first part of this book is dedicated to the extension projects. A thorough analysis of all remaining administrative archives and a great many cartographic documents has enabled the author to reconstruct the decision process about the scale, design, and realization of the extensions. The second part contains chapters concerning land use, public space and water management. Metropolis in the Making tells the story of one of the cradles of early modern capitalism and at the same time one of the most meticulously planned cities in the world. Its broad approach of planning makes this a standard work on early modern urbanism

Abstract

Abstract

This atlas presents the spatial development of Amsterdam through a series of historical and newly drawn maps, from the city’s humble beginnings to the present day, and in an international context. Comparisons are made between Amsterdam and cities like Venice, London, Paris, and Vienna.Amsterdam originated around the year 1200 as a small port town at the mouth of the river Amstel. In the 16th century, the rapidly growing merchant town became the bustling centre of the province of Holland. A hundred years later, in the Dutch Golden Age, Amsterdam grew into a powerful metropolis with connections across the globe. This was the time when the famous Canal District and the new town hall on Dam Square were built. The city dominated the surrounding region: dozens of lakes were drained to create agricultural land to feed the city, and wealthy Amsterdam citizens built themselves hundreds of luxury country houses. After a period of dramatic decline, the opening of a canal to the North Sea in 1876 inaugurated an era of renewed growth. Amsterdam’s Second Golden Age manifested in large-scale extensions and embellishment projects. In the 20th century, Amsterdam was one of the first cities in the world in which urban planning was guided by Modernist ideas about light, air, and space. It was the time of the garden cities, culminating in the ‘city of the future’, the megastructure of the Bijlmermeer housing estate. The latest urban extensions occupy a series of artificial islands, but the most remarkable achievements are the successful redevelopment of former dockyards, and the international business centre arising in the Zuidas area, close to Schiphol Airport.

Abstract

Essays on the often-ignored spatial dynamism of pre-modern towns: about urban space gradually or radically adapting to the changing conditions of city life. 'Transforming Space' deals with visible and invisible changes in pre-modern cities, their causes and the way in which they were perceived and received. The chapters in this book analyse the development and management of urban space, combining case studies and insights from a range of cities from all over Europe. Several contributions deal with the impact of major events on the urban tissue: geopolitics; disasters such as fires or wars; expropriation or redevelopment projects directed by urban governments; religious change such as the Dissolution in England, and the Reformation and Counter-Reformation on the continent. On closer scrutiny, however, some of these major events were only an accelerator of already ongoing processes of change. By shifting the perspective from the city as a whole, to neighbourhoods, urban blocks or even plots of land, other chapters reveal how functional change or real estate dynamics changed the urban landscape almost imperceptibly. This book is written from a comparative perspective that takes into account path-dependency. Pre-existing power relations, ideology and mentality, the resilience of property structures, the impact of building regulations, subsidies, or the effects of real estate markets are shown to have had different outcomes for different social groups and the evolution of neighbourhoods.
