Doelstelling: Deze masterproef onderzoekt in welke mate de Nederlandse en Engelse pers verschillen in de berichtgeving over de Pim Fortuyn-crisis. Middelen of methode: Het onderzoek gebeurt aan de hand van 'appraisal theory'; een methodologie om teksten te analyseren op subjectieve evaluaties met betrekking tot affect, judgement en appreciation en op journalistic voices (writer or reporter voice). 40 artikels, 20 uit NRC Handelsblad en Algemeen Dagblad en 20 uit The Times en The Guardian, werden willekeurig geselecteerd en geanalyseerd volgens 'appraisal theory'. Er werd ook een analyse uitgevoerd op verschillen in woordkeuze. Resultaten: Hoewel de meerderheid van de Nederlandse artikels tot writer voice behoort en dus subjectiever is, blijkt de Engelse berichtgeving over de Pim Fortuyn-crisis opmerkelijk veel sensationeler (keuze quotes, woordgebruik,..) dan de Nederlandstalige pers. In het Engelse corpus maakte men eerder gebruik van attributed material: observed affect/appreciation en no authorial judgement, terwijl de Nederlandse jouralisten vaker opteerden voor authorial affect, appreciation en judgement. Het onderzoek bevestigt grotendeels de theorie van journalistic voices door Martin & White (2005).
