Abstract

This book contains the abstracts from the 12th International Conference on Fracture Fatigue and Wear (FFW 2024), held in Xi'an, China. It brings together international experts from academia and industry to discuss advances in fracture mechanics, fatigue of materials, tribology, and wear. The conference aims to foster collaboration among researchers working on theoretical, numerical, and experimental methods to enhance the understanding and application of these fields. Keynote speakers include Prof. Nao-Aki Noda and Dr. Yunlai Zhou, who presented on topics such as sleeve slip mechanisms and structural dynamic analysis. This collection of abstracts serves as a valuable resource for scientists and engineers focused on materials science and mechanical engineering.

Abstract

This volume of 'Engineering Innovations' presents a collection of research articles on cutting-edge engineering topics. It covers various engineering challenges and innovations, including the simulation of stress intensity factors and J-integrals on UIC 54 railway failures using fracture mechanics, the behavior of thin-walled cylinders with ribs for energy absorption, and topology optimization of motorbike footrests using finite element methods. The book aims to provide insights into the latest developments in engineering design and analysis, targeting professionals, researchers, and students in the field of mechanical and industrial engineering. The studies utilize advanced simulation tools like ANSYS to explore issues such as fatigue failure in railway tracks due to repetitive loading and defects, offering solutions for improving structural resilience and performance.

Abstract

This book introduces a unified implementation of bond- and state-based peridynamic theory (PD) within a commercial finite element framework, Ansys, utilizing its native elements. It details the implementation of the PD theory and its integration with traditional finite elements. The primary objective is to equip students, researchers, and practicing engineers with both theoretical and practical knowledge of the PD theory, along with the skills necessary for analyzing engineering problems using Ansys. The book demonstrates that, unlike the conventional finite element method (FEM), the PD theory is highly suitable for progressive failure analysis, the multi-scale analysis of materials involving fracture and failure, and multi-physics analysis, including electromigration, corrosion, and electrodeposition. Additionally, it provides a step-by-step illustration of the specific procedures in the pre-processing, solution, and post-processing phases of the analysis through the Graphical User Interface (GUI) for various applications. The book is designed to be introductory and self-contained, minimizing the need for additional reference material. Describes an implementation of PD theory and its coupling to finite element method in Ansys, using its native elements; Utilization of Ansys through both the Graphics User Interface (GUI) and the Ansys Parametric Design Language (APDL); Explains the process for solving problems in various applications with the Ansys GUI, includes Ansys input files.

Abstract

This unique, first of its kind, book offers an integrated treatment of the atomistic-continuum behaviours of single and interacting microdefects under elasto-static loading. These microdefects may take the form of nanocracks, microcracks, microvoids, inclusions, and inhomogeneities. Professor Meguid elucidates the subject matter using novel treatment that offers a fresh look at molecular and continuum mechanics, imperfections in solids, the Griffith crack, modes of failure and diagnostics at varied length scales, LEFM and multiscale modeling of interacting microdefects. Providing a range of perspectives from theory and applications, this book is ideal for college seniors, graduate students, practicing and research engineers interested in failure analysis, diagnostics and prevention. Fosters greater understanding of fracture mechanics concepts at varied length scales; Adopts a unique approach combining atomistic and continuum behaviours of interacting nano/microdefects; Empowers conceptual interpretations of content through a thorough treatment of the subject.
