This book presents interdisciplinary scholarship on art and visual culture that explores disability in terms of lived experience. It will expand critical disability studies scholarship on representation and embodiment, which is theoretically rich, but lacking in attention to art. It is organized in five thematic parts: methodologies of access, agency, and ethics in cultural institutions; the politics and ethics of collaboration; embodied representations of artists with disabilities in the visual and performing arts; negotiating the outsider art label; and first-person reflections on disability and artmaking. This volume will be of interest to scholars who study disability studies, art history, art education, gender studies, museum studies, and visual culture.

"This timely Research Handbook provides a comprehensive and wide-ranging exploration of relevant developments concerning disability rights at EU level. It also looks beyond the EU, focusing on how disability has been relevant in EU external relations. In addition, the Handbook considers the interface between EU disability law and Council of Europe law. Expert contributors address key questions related to the scope and impact of EU disability law, examining its compliance with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the gaps that remain to be filled in implementation by the EU. Analyzing the most important and recent developments in EU disability law, the chapters in this Handbook trace its evolution, and assess the extent to which disability rights are protected and promoted in various strands of EU law and policy. The Handbook highlights the connections, overlaps and inconsistencies which exist across those strands. This thought-provoking Research Handbook will be a valuable resource for scholars; researchers and students of disability law, EU law and international law; as well as practitioners, policy makers, civil society organizations and European think tanks engaged with the fields of EU and international disability law"-- This Research Handbook comes at an opportune time, and provides a comprehensive and wide-ranging exploration of relevant developments concerning disability rights at EU level. An anthology of approximately 40 contributions from authors living with mental illness and/or physical disability. In autobiographical and fictional pieces, poems, vignettes, images and sounds, the authors use self-determined words and signs for themselves and the world to explore their bodies, perceptions, and feelings. Some contributions celebrate connections between self, nature, and others. Some describe personal experience in the face of multiple obstacles and barriers thrown up by the outside world. Others explore neurodiversity and disability in the context of oppressions such as racism and transphobia. All of the pieces provide a window to loving, empowering, poetic, humorous, angry and tender new ways of seeing the world.
