Die nach der Fundteilung in das Vorderasiatische Museum in Berlin gelangten Terrakotten aus den Grabungen der DOG am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts in Assur werden nun in ihrem Gesamtbestand vorgelegt. Es handelt sich um knapp 1900 Stücke, die etwa zur Hälfte aus anthropomorphen Figuren, zu einem weiteren Drittel aus Darstellungen von Tieren sowie von Möbeln und Streitwagen bestehen.Die Terrakotten aus Assur nehmen unter den Fundkomplexen aus Mesopotamien eine besondere Stellung ein, da sie den Zeitraum von der Mitte des 3. Jahrtausends v.Chr. bis in die parthische Periode des 3. Jahrhunderts abdecken, die hellenistische Epoche ist aus historischen Gründen nicht vertreten. Sie sind entgegen der in Mesopotamien verbreiteteren Praxis vorwiegend mit der Hand hergestellt worden und weisen somit größere individuelle Vielfalt in den Typen auf, als dies bei der Formproduktion üblich ist, die in Assur nur bei einem kleinen Teil der Stücke genutzt wurde. Die Vorlage der Terrakotten von einem der wichtigsten Fundorte des nördlichen Mesopotamien in einem ausführlichen Katalog mit Kommentaren und neuen Fotos in verschiedenen Ansichten bilden die Grundlage für die weitere Forschung zu dieser Gattung und für vergleichende Studien. -- Source éditeur

The book is dedicated to the memory of the late Professor Hanna SzymaÅska, written by eminent scholars, representing the fields of Egyptology, Classical Archaeology, Early Christian Studies and Conservation of Artefacts.Most of the studies are related to discoveries made by Hanna­ SzymaÅska in Egypt, at Tell Atrib and Marea. Some of the sensational discoveries unearthed recently at the Byzantine basilica at Mareao are presented here for the first time by K. Babraj, T. Derda, E. JastrzÄbowska, and B. Lichocka. A group of articles is reminiscent of H. SzymaÅska s studies on Egyptian terracottas from ancient Athribis. K. MyÅliwiec presents the actual stage of research. S. JÄdraszek discusses social implications of some types of Hellenistic figurines, P. Ballet analyses Early Christian terracottas from other sites, while N. Willburger proposes a new interpretation of the iconographic topos depicting an old drunken woman. Other contributions concern the sites of Deir el-Baha­ri (E. Laskowska-Kusztal), Dendera (A. Åukaszewicz) and Shenhur (T. Górecki, A. PoÅudnikiewicz). There is also a study on ancient stomatological instruments (A. Krug), an analysis of the relationships between Christian and Islamic religious texts (K. KoÅcielniak) and a description of Józef SÄkowski s journey to Egypt and Nubia in 19th century (J. Åliwa). G. Kor­pal analyses the conservation work on a modern sculpture, and T. Å"urkowska describes the ambience of the excavations mission directed by H. SzymaÅska in a humourus way. A scien­tific biography of Hanna SzymaÅska, written by M. Dzielska, is found at the beginning of the book.
