Abstract

A typeface is one of the basic tools of human communication and for a long time a poster belonged to the most widespread means of mass communication. Upon the arrival of digital technologies it seemed that a poster would gradually disappear from the print media. However, it turns out that along with still more intensive everyday use of various text displays, there is also a renaissance of a traditional typeface poster and its extinction is probably not in sight yet.

Abstract

This book charts the trajectory of travel journalism from its print based origins to the emergence of hybridised multi-platform content. It considers how this has led to not only different kinds of travel journalism but different kinds of travel journalists; the professional travel journalist is now challenged online by user generated content. Cocking focuses on the conventions and “news values” of British print-based travel journalism, examining the genre’s liminal position between truth and fiction. In the context of the expansion of global tourism, Cocking explores how travel journalism from different parts of the world negotiates cultural differences in its depictions of destinations, regions, and tourist practices. Consideration is also given to the political potential of travel journalism and its capacity for awareness raising. Based on original research including qualitative analysis of print-based articles and blogs this book offers an innovative and original contribution to this emerging field of study.

Abstract

This book illuminates the concept of disaster communities through a series of international case studies. It offers an eclectic overview of how different forms of media and journalism contribute to our understanding of the lived experiences of communities at risk from, affected by, and recovering from disaster. This collection considers the different forms of media and journalism produced by and for communities and how they may recognise and speak to the different notions of community that emerge in disaster contexts – including vulnerabilities and consequences that arise from environmental destruction and geophysical hazards, the insecurity created by armed conflict and limitations on journalistic freedoms, and result from human (in)action and humanitarian crises.

Abstract

This book provides a fresh perspective on the familiar belief that memory policies are successful in building peaceful societies. Whether in a stable democracy or in the wake of a violent political conflict, this book argues that memory policies are unhelpful in preventing hate, genocide, and mass crimes. Since the 1990s, transmitting the memory of violent pasts has been utilised in attempts to foster tolerance and fight racism, hate and antisemitism. However, countries that invested in memory policies have overseen the rise of hate crimes and populisms instead of growing social cohesion. Breaking with the usual moralistic position, this book takes stock of this situation. Where do these memory policies come from? Whom do they serve? Can we make them more effective? In other words, can we really learn from the past? At a time when memory studies is blooming, this book questions the normative belief in the effects of memory.

Abstract

This book addresses the socio-technical constitution of civic communication in increasingly digital democracies. Despite problematic phenomena like hate speech in online commenting, it argues that citizens’ potential for resisting technological inscriptions in digital media remains a fundamental democratic right. While producers inscribe anticipations for how people should be discussing political issues into commenting interfaces, citizens still resist these technological inscriptions in their commenting practices. This dialectic interrelation between interfaces and practices highlights the inadequacy of purely technological solutions for undemocratic tendencies in digital media. Contents Online commenting as civic communication Socio-technical dialectics of online commenting Interrelation of interfaces and practices Interfaces, practices and interactions in online commenting Target groups lecturers and students of media and communication studies, media sociology, science and technology studies and political science social media editors, journalists, political communicators, media and internet policy specialists The Author Anne Mollen is research assistant at the Department of Communication at the University of Münster and scientific coordinator at the Research Training Group "Trust and Communication in a Digitized World".

Abstract

The Media Freedom Analyzer developed by Laura Schneider is a new way to measure global media freedom in a more objective, unbiased and transparent way. Grounded in the opinions of around 1000 experts from 126 countries, the index is the first empirically validated tool to assess free and independent media across the world. The existing press freedom rankings are frequently criticized for being arbitrary and having a Western bias. This book tackles this very problem. In times of widespread populism, disinformation and mistrust in the media, it is vitally important to have an assessment tool that is accepted across cultures. Contents • Different Concepts of Media Freedom • Measuring Media Freedom: an Overview • Critical Analysis of the Five International Media Freedom Indices • Evaluation of Media Freedom Indicators by Worldwide Experts • The Media Freedom Analyzer: Construction of a New Measuring Instrument Target Groups • Lecturers and students of media studies, communication studies, journalism, social science, political science, international development, and democracy research • Practitioners in the fields of international development, media development and good governance, activists, NGOs and researchers in the field of freedom of expression The Author Dr. Laura Schneider is Head of Research and Evaluation at Deutsche Welle Akademie, Germany’s leading institution for international media development. Her work focuses on the viability of media across the world and the significance of freedom of expression for sustainable development.

Abstract

This book sheds new light on Indian communication cultures and the critical philosophical trajectories of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. It explores issues such as contemporary communication cultures in India, nationalism, subjectivities, negotiating and protesting bodies, music on social media, children on reality television, and the materialities of Indian films. The book provides a balance between issues of communication from a philosophical perspective and issues of philosophy from a communication perspective in the Indian context. This engaging examination of two modes of thought is an important resource for anyone interested in communication studies, modern philosophy, cultural and media studies.

Abstract

This book provides a robust conceptualization of peace. Hamelink defines peace as conceived of moments of celebrating human togetherness, with deep fractures that polarize society standing in the way of collectively celebrating togetherness and posing a serious existential risk to humanity. ‘Deep dialogue’ is the form of human cooperative communication that is needed to build communities that can overcome polarization. This is the most difficult form of human conversation as it is based upon trust, mutuality, patience and freedom, and requires safe, non-threatening spaces, but this book explains how to overcome the essential obstacles that prevent this dialogue. To curate a ‘deep dialogue’ we must turn to humanity’s unique resource: our ability to communicate pro-socially and cooperatively.
