Abstract

Indonesia is a diverse archipelago nation of more than 300 ethnic groups and has the largest economy in Southeast Asia as well as notable economic growth since overcoming the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s. The World Bank led Wealth Accounting and the Valuation of Ecosystem Services Partnership (WAVES) worked with the Government from 2015 to 2019 to strengthen SISNERLING, focusing on land and ecosystem accounting. 26 The results and lessons learned of this long-term engagement are reported in this document, and the full body of work produced by WAVES will be made available online and provide input for future analysis. The report has five sections, including this introductory section. Section two provides information on the environmental and economic development in Indonesia, in context of wealth and natural capital, and how NCA has been embraced by the Government of Indonesia. Section three focuses on results from the developed natural capital accounts, while section four reveals the impact of NCA in policy and planning and section five describes the way forward. The references and annexes follow on from these sections.

Abstract

In order to reach sustainable supply chains, the Ecologically Dominant Logic calls for improvement in measurements. With regard to climate change, this is the task of corporate carbon accounting and footprinting. This book contributes to these topics by proposing a double-entry based bookkeeping approach for carbon accounting, that enables continuous reporting along the supply chain, supports both product and corporate carbon footprinting and is compliant with the established carbon accounting standards. Furthermore, for estimating missing carbon footprints, a regression-based estimation approach is proposed and tested, which needs only publicly available data as input and facilitates the estimation at a decent level of quality without knowledge about the internal processes of a company.

Abstract

"Breaking Boundaries analyzes efforts made by communities and policy makers around the world to push beyond conventional approaches to environmental decision making to enhance public acceptance, sustainability, and the impact of those decisions in local contexts. The current political climate has generated uncertainty among citizens, industry interests, scientists, and other stakeholders, but by applying concepts from various perspectives of environmental communication and deliberative democracy, this book offers a series of lessons learned for both public officials and concerned citizens. The contributors offer a broader understanding of how individuals and groups can get involved effectively in environmental decisions through traditional formats as well as alternative approaches ranging from leadership capacity building to social media activity to civic technology." -- Publisher's description

Abstract

Unnatural Resources explores the intersection of energy production and environmental regulation in Appalachia after the oil embargo of 1973. The years from 1969 to 1973 saw the passage of a number of laws meant to protect the environment from human destruction, and they initially enjoyed broad public popularity. However, the oil embargo, which caused lines and fistfights at gasoline stations, refocused Americans' attention on economic issues and alerted Americans to the dangers of relying on imported oil. As a drive to increase domestic production of energy gained momentum, it soon appeared that new environmental regulations were inhibiting this initiative. A backlash against environmental regulations helped inaugurate a bipartisan era of market-based thinking in American politics and discredited the idea that the federal government had a constructive role to play in addressing energy issues. This study connects political, labor, and environmental history to contribute to a growing body of literature on the decline of the New Deal and the rise of pro-market thinking in American politics.

Abstract

The study of the interactions between business organizations and their natural environments has gained momentum recently under the aegis of social and environmental accounting and reporting (SEAR), and as a diluted form of response in corporate social responsibility (CSR), Environmental Accounting, Sustainability and Accountability, envisages accounting as an effective instrument in improving this interrelationship. It comprehensively describes how organizations can capture their environmental performance and thereby address societal concerns. The book closely explores how organizations can embed care for the environment as fundamental to their functioning. It broadly covers traditional accounting as a measuring instrument, contemporary advances and unresolved problems, alternative perspectives and recent developments. The central idea proposed here is to evolve the environmental accounting framework and bring calculative aspects into sustainability thinking that businesses are responsible for. Among the other important innovative ideas discussed are new costing techniques for waste management, accounting schematics of carbon trade, green information needs of management and the extension of the environmental viewpoint to information systems and technology.

Abstract

This book assesses the changes that the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) could produce by boosting the competitiveness of firms in India and Korea. It evaluates the CEPA in terms of its effects on the environment and natural resources of the importing and exporting countries alike. Further, it employs the revealed comparative advantage (RCA) and relative trade advantage (RTA) methods of analysis to gauge the influence of the CEPA on industrial competitiveness in both host and receiving countries. While the CEPA would increase trade between India and Korea in their respective strong domains, the book argues that, given the nature of the exported and imported goods and products, India would be more susceptible to serious environmental impacts than would Korea. The book subsequently presents these impacts in a qualitative framework and stresses the need for a comprehensive valuation of not only environmental impacts, but also the losses due to tariff cuts and the gains due to increased trade between the two countries.
