This is the first overview of the career of Alison and Peter Smithson, the most controversial yet most widely-influential of post-war architectural practices. From their first youthful project, the school at Hunstanton, to their final works, they epitomised the idea of the avant-garde architect, and were strongly engaged with artists and critics and with groups and tendencies in Britain and beyond. Structured thematically and chronologically, the book gives a coherent and compact narrative of the Smithsons' work and ideas. As well as all of the major buildings - including the Economist complex, the Garden building at St Hilda's College, and the Robin Hood Gardens estate - the book also discusses unbuilt projects, including substantial work for the British embassy at Brasilia and the Kuwait mat-building. It culminates with the less well-known factory additions, museum and house for Axel Bruchhauser, a furniture manufacturer in Germany. Central to their work, Mark Crinson argues, was a concern with belonging, with how we identify ourselves with places in a context of change. Lavishly illustrated with new colour images as well as original drawings and historic photography, this book is an essential read for architects, students and enthusiasts for modernism wanting to learn more about the Smithsons.

Brutalism is back. Vilified for decades as the stepchild of modernism, brutalist architecture is now enjoying a comeback as the latest discovery among digital trendsetters: uncompromising and incredibly daring, the colossal structures of the 1960s and 1970s both stand as testament to the postwar years and inspire contemporary architectural language. Massive, Expressive, Sculptural – Brutalism Now and Then offers a sophisticated comparison of historical and contemporary brutalist buildings. Similarities as well as differences are explored and analyzed over 300 pages using a series of impressive architectural projects. Large-scale sculptural forms, coarsely finished materials and floor plans that defy convention merge with contemporary design to generate enthralling new creations. Bunker-like bungalows reveal classy interiors, vast religious buildings disclose innovative perspectives and gigantic concrete structures surprise with delicate, artistic elements. Showcasing examples of brutalism from the past and the present by some of the greatest and most interesting architects, this publication enables a profound understanding of this very undervalued style of architecture.

Situated between the capitalist West and the socialist East, Yugoslavia's architects responded to contradictory demands and influences, developing a postwar architecture both in line with and distinct from the design approaches seen elsewhere in Europe and beyond. The architecture that emerged from International Style skyscrapers to Brutalist social condensers is a manifestation of the radical diversity, hybridity, and idealism that characterized the Yugoslav state itself. 'Toward a Concrete Utopia: Architecture in Yugoslavia, 1948-1980' introduces the exceptional work of socialist Yugoslavia's leading architects to an international audience for the first time, highlighting a significant yet thus-far understudied body of modernist architecture, whose forward-thinking contributions still resonate today. Exhibition: The Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA (15.07.2018-13.01.2019).
