Cave is a series of publications featuring commissioned and republished explorations, anecdotes, research, documents, case studies, essays, and scenarios on how to think and practice contemporary collecting. The first issue of Cave looks into the territory of the public collection considering it both a semantic ground for institutional collecting as well as political and cultural infrastructure. Artists, scholars, and other thinkers address the role of museums and collections for identity-making and territorial representation, the increasing invisibility of the collection, productive and problematic processes of inclusion and exclusion, and what seems to be a general distrust towards history in the contemporary art museum. As such they speculate on radical yet tangible strategies for the activation and sedimentation of the collection in the contemporary art museum from the point of view of its architecture, scale, locality, history, organizational model, display, research, and collecting methodologies.

From September 25, 2016 onwards, Herbert Foundation presents the exhibition Time Extended / 1964 - 1978. The presentation forms the first part of a diptych that unites the Collection and the Archive in a flexible, yet lasting manner. Time Extended / 1964 - 1978 focuses on the period surrounding the historic events of 1968, which also constitutes the outset of the Herbert Collection. The social shifts occurring in these years, as well as the contact with the artists and a number of progressive gallery owners, determined Annick and Anton Herbert's vision with regards to collecting. The title of the exhibition refers to Time Extended / Distance Extended, a work from 1969 by Dan Graham, which is part of the Herbert Collection. The apparent opposition between, on the one hand, outlining the period 1964-1978 and, on the other hand, 'extending' time, characterises the intention of the exhibition. Because, even though the presented works and documents are unmistakably connected to the period in which they were created, their content is also very valuable from a contemporary perspective. Exhibition: Herbert Foundation, Ghent, Belgium (September 25, 2016 - ).

Hercules Segers (1589/90-1633/40) was an artist, like Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt van Rijn, who wanted to fathom and reproduce the essence of nature and the world. There is no evidence that Segers ever travelled or saw mountains in real life. His strange and wonderful mountain landscapes and endless vistas bear witness to an unbounded imagination. Segers was a truly pioneering etcher, developing wholly individual, arcane techniques for his colourful etchings. Poets and artists down through the ages have been inspired and fascinated by his poetic and melancholic paintings and prints. Rembrandt owned no fewer than eight of his paintings.A total of eighteen paintings and a hundred and ten impressions of fifty-four prints will be on show in the Rijksmuseum. Exhibition: Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, The Netherlands (07.10.2016-08.01.2017) / Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, USA (2017)
