Pink Herrings engages in a re-examination of six of Freud's cases via Lacan's account of sexuation. Specifically, the book outlines a theoretical framework in which sexuation is understood as a 'choice' made in response to the fact of the sexual non relationship. In making this choice, unconscious fantasy allows for the circulation of object a, which bear traces of jouissance. Drawing upon Lacan's distinction between phallic and other jouissance, Pink Herrings examines the four positions outlined in Lacan's formula of sexuation, and maps these onto the six case studies. In so doing, Pink Herrings not only brings new life and insights to the cases, but also clears a path to what is referred to as a 'clinic of sexuation'. Such a clinic would not replace existing Lacanian psychoanalytic practice (with its focus on the structures of neurosis, perversion and psychosis), but instead provide additional avenues through which to explore the operations of fantasy.

Public policy often assumes there is one correct way to be a family. Rethinking Sexual Citizenship argues that policies that enforce this idea hurt all of us and harm our democracy. Jyl J. Josephson uses the concept of "sexual citizenship" (a criticism of the assumption that all families have a heterosexual at their center) to show how government policies are made to punish or reward particular groups of people. This analysis applies sexual citizenship not only to policies that impact LGBTQ families, but also to other groups, including young people affected by abstinence-only public policies and single-parent families affected by welfare policy. The book also addresses the idea that the "normal" family in the United States is white. It concludes with a discussion of how scholars and activists can help create a more inclusive democracy by challenging this narrow view of public life.

"Wayang kulit, or shadow puppetry, connects a mythic past to the present through public ritual performance and is one of most important performance traditions in Bali. The dalang, or puppeteer, is revered in Balinese society as a teacher and spiritual leader. Recently, women have begun to study and perform in this traditionally male role, an innovation that has triggered resistance and controversy. In Women in the Shadows, Jennifer Goodlander draws on her own experience training as a dalang as well as interviews with early women dalang and leading artists to upend the usual assessments of such gender role shifts. She argues that rather than assuming that women performers are necessarily mounting a challenge to tradition, "tradition" in Bali must be understood as a system of power that is inextricably linked to gender hierarchy. She examines the very idea of "tradition" and how it forms both an ideological and social foundation in Balinese culture. Ultimately, Goodlander offers a richer, more complicated understanding of both tradition and gender in Balinese society"--
