Concrete takes a fresh look at the world's most versatile and abundant building material. Collating fascinating and beautiful concrete buildings by some of the most celebrated architects of the last century, it features familiar projects from Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright alongside work from some of the leading lights of contemporary architecture including Zaha Hadid, Herzog & de Meuron, and many lesser-known newcomers. Arranged to promote comparison and discussion, the selected projects take the reader on a global tour of inspiring and intriguing structures: a German skatepark sits beside an Italian rooftop test track, a Japanese crematorium alongside a Portuguese swimming pool and a Brazilian government building next to a Chinese opera house. Illustrated with extraordinary photographs, each project includes an extended caption providing a commentary on the building. An essay by Leonard Koren, author of the best-selling Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers, offers an evocative and perceptive view of concrete through the author's experience of studying architecture in California and living in Tokyo. Concrete is a beautiful and informative visual exploration of a material often considered dull and cold but actually full of spectacular potential.

Although traditionally a building material of the warmer climate zones, bamboo is becoming increasingly popular amongst architects in the northern hemisphere; bamboo has several advantages: it is very stable, of low weight, and highly elastic, in addition to being readily available as well as renewable. The applications of bamboo in architecture have become significantly wider and diversified, so that today, even structures with large spans, such as bridges are built with this material. The new and revised second edition of this manual provides a practical, systematic overview of the numerous potential applications and processing methods of this renewable material. The comprehensive presentation of groundbreaking bamboo buildings has been updated with more recent projects.

Since the introduction of steel as a building material in the early 20th century, its superior performance has challenged conventional wisdom about construction, enabling designs of surprising lightness and span. From the Eames House in Los Angeles to the Hôtel Tassel in Brussels and the Maison de Verre in Paris, Ma maison en acier celebrates the use of steel in residential architecture. These icons of steel construction should inspire architects to rediscover the advantages of this versatile material in contemporary residential architecture, from industrial prefabrication and a swift and dry construction process to structural adaptability over a building’s lifetime. Drawing on recent research at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Institute of Constructive Design, the essays in Ma maison en acier reflect on steel residential architecture from today’s perspective. The book features contemporary examples by Atelier Bow-Wow, Christian Kerez, Lacaton and Vassal, and Made In, among others.
