Abstract

This is the first full-length study of Ecclesiastes using methods of philosophical exegesis, specifically those of the modern French philosophers Levinas and Blanchot. T. A. Perry opens up new horizons in the philosophical understanding of the Hebrew Bible, offering a series of meditations on its general spiritual outlook. Perry breaks down Ecclesiastes' motto 'all is vanity' and returns 'vanity' to its original concrete meaning of 'breath', the breath of life. This central and forgotten teaching of Ecclesiastes leads to new areas of breath research related both to environmentalism and breath control.

Abstract

The Sage of Time and Chance is a work of fiction based on Ecclesiastes, the most skeptical book in the Bible. Ecclesiastes was written by a Hebrew sage called Koheleth who had the courage to wonder whether human beings were different from animals, and why the mind was limited in its ability to comprehend life. In The Sage of Time and Chance, Koheleth summons translators from all the corners of the Earth to review his provocative manuscript before he dies. The story is set in Jerusalem in the third century BCE, a peaceful period rich in cultural exchange and scholarship. Among the translators who come to the council are a monk from India, a Scythian warrior, and a shaman. Bitter rivalries and misunderstandings make reaching consensus difficult and dangerous. So also does the presence of actual translators of Ecclesiastes from the future, including Jerome (Latin) and Saadia ben Yosef (Arabic). The most unusual translator is a silent child who understands more than all the others what it means to be human--the essential question that drives Koheleth. Led by the child, Koheleth navigates around the pitfalls of cynicism and finds his way back to joy.

Abstract

Abstract

"Brought to Florence at the instance of Lorenzo de' Medici to become lector to the Dominican community at San Marco, Girolamo Savonarola would ultimately be responsible for the events that convulsed the city in the 1490s and led to the overthrow of the Medici themselves. Savonarola's apocalyptic sermons, preached from the pulpits of San Marco and the Duomo, predicted dire consequences for a sinful Florence, a scourging, if the Florentines did not mend their ways and form themselves into a commonwealth for God. Fully in the ascendant by 1495, Savonarola increasingly used his platform in Florence to urge a renewal of the entire Church, a renovatio ecclesiae that implicated the papacy as a particular impediment to reform. He was accused of heresy and eventually excommunicated by the Borgia pope, Alexander VI, on 13 May 1497. Savonarola refused to acknowledge the validity of the excommunication and defended himself against the charges. But he was soon arrested by the Florentine Signoria--the city's highest magistracy--at the pope's behest. He was then brought to trial for falsely claiming to have seen visions and uttered prophecies, for religious error, and sedition. In a few days it was all over. Girolamo Savonarola was hanged and burned, together with two of his Dominican disciples from San Marco, in Florence's Piazza della Signoria on 23 May 1498, still professing adherence to the Church. Girolamo Savonarola's self-defense, like his visionary teaching, was preached from the pulpits of Florence, but was also carried on through a series of writings. The works presented in this volume were all written by the friar during the dramatic months leading up to his death, as he ever more desperately defended his actions to those who were ranged against him"--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Atkinson uses Qoheleth's work ethic to provide an analysis of Ecclesiastes, utilising the writings of St Bonaventure and Martin Luther. Reading Ecclesiastes within a penitential framework, Bonaventure offers a version of the contemptus mundi tradition that is rooted in his metaphysics. His commentary is ethically significant for the way he detects the vice of curiousity precipitating a perceptual rupture wherein vanity comes to signify sin and guilt. Luther, on the other hand, interprets Solomon as a wise economic-political administrator who preaches the good news of God's involvement in quoti
