Published in six volumes between 1894 and 1905, this collection served as a valuable reference work for students and scholars of Egyptology at a time when ongoing archaeological excavations were adding significantly to the understanding of one of the world's oldest civilisations. At the forefront of this research was Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie, whose pioneering methods made Near Eastern archaeology a much more systematic and scientific discipline. Many of his other publications are also reissued in this series. Britain's first professor of Egyptology from 1892, Petrie was conscious of the fact that there was no textbook he could recommend to his students. The work of Weidemann was in German and out of date, so Petrie and his collaborators incorporated the latest theories and discoveries in this English-language resource. In Volume 1, Petrie covers Egyptian history from its beginnings to the 16th dynasty.

Bildliche Darstellungen des heute unter dem Namen "Greif" bekannten Fabelwesens haben eine bald fünftausendjährige Geschichte, innerhalb derer Ägypten mit seinen Bildern aus drei Jahrtausenden ein wichtiges Kapitel darstellt.Eine Untersuchung der sich zum Teil stark voneinander unterscheidenden altägyptischen Belege, die von der Frühzeit bis in die Ptolemäisch-Römische Zeit reichen und zunächst nur Bild-, ab dem Mittleren Reich auch Schriftquellen umfassen, ist mit der Schwierigkeit behaftet, dass die Bezeichnung "Greif" bislang keiner spezifischen, ägyptologischen Definition unterliegt und daher in der Forschung sehr unterschiedlich eingesetzt und ausgelegt wurde. Die heutige Konnotation dieses Begriffes als Mischwesen aus Adler und Löwe geht auf ein – im Vergleich zu den altägyptischen Belegen – sehr junges Greifenbild zurück, das in der ägyptologischen Literatur auch für Wesen wie beispielsweise den menschenköpfigen Sphinx mit angelegten Flügeln oder den falkenköpfigen Sphinx herangezogen wurde.Diese Arbeit legt nun die Begrifflichkeiten fest und gibt einen umfassenden Überblick über die Beleglage in Ägypten, wobei besonders Funktion(en) und Sinngehalt des/der ägyptischen "Greifen" in den Vordergrund gestellt und der Kontext der jeweiligen Darstellungen bzw. der Bildträger und der Schriftquellen beachtet wird.Aus einem Text- und einem Katalogteil bestehend, widmet sich dieser Band ausschließlich den altägyptischen Quellen und Belegen. Der Katalog umfasst 182 Bild- und 26 Schriftquellen.

In Terracotta and domestic worship. Bestiary of the Graeco-Roman Egypt , Celine Boutantin proposes a new approach of terracotta produced in Egypt in the Greco-Roman period. A study taking into account the archaeological contexts allows to propose a synthesis of production workshops and to show, in some cases, an adaptation of the production of local cults. An inventory of figurines found in homes, temples and tombs allow to study the functions of these objects. Through the study of a particular theme, animal terracottas, the author raises questions about beliefs and personal or private practices. Dans Terres cuites et culte domestique. Bestiaire de l’Égypte gréco-romaine , Céline Boutantin propose une nouvelle approche des figurines en terre cuite produites en Égypte à l’époque gréco-romaine. Une étude prenant en compte les contextes archéologiques permet de dresser un bilan des ateliers de production et de montrer, dans certains cas, une adaptation de la production à des cultes locaux. Elle permet aussi de dresser un inventaire des figurines trouvées dans les maisons, les sanctuaires et les tombes et de proposer une synthèse sur les fonctions de ces objets. A travers l’étude d’un thème particulier, les représentations animales, l’auteur aborde sous un angle nouveau la question des croyances et des pratiques personnelles ou privées.
