The oath was an institution of fundamental importance across a wide range of social interactions throughout the ancient Greek world, making a crucial contribution to social stability and harmony; yet there has been no comprehensive, dedicated scholarly study of the subject for over a century. This volume of a two-volume study explores the nature of oaths as Greeks perceived it, the ways in which they were used (and sometimes abused) in Greek life and literature, and their inherent binding power.

Ethische comptetentie van politieambtenaren is cruciaal onder meer omwille van de legitimiteit van de politie. En 1996, l’affaire « Dutroux » éclate. On assiste alors à un emballement de l’action publique qui débouche trois ans plus tard sur la réforme des polices. Depuis cette date, selon certains observateurs, « la réforme est continue ». Plus d’une décennie après la mise en œuvre d’un changement d’une telle envergure, il était opportun d’observer la manière dont il s’est traduit sur le terrain. L’originalité de cet ouvrage s’exprime à plusieurs égards. D’abord, il propose une chronique détaillée de la réforme des polices dont il examine les principaux référentiels : la sécurité, l’excellence, l’EFQM comme modèle de management, le « community policing », etc. Ensuite, l’ouvrage envisage la manière dont ces derniers sont mis en œuvre au sein de la police locale, en examinant la police « par en haut » et « par en bas ». Il jette alors un éclairage sur des sujets peu documentés : les cadres supérieurs, le processus décisionnel, le syndicalisme policier, la relation entre le parquet et la police, la police et son public, et les effets du management. Basé sur de nombreuses observations et interviews, dans une perspective alliant la sociologie de l’action publique et la sociologie des organisations, cet ouvrage constitue une référence pour celles et ceux qui s’intéressent à la sécurité publique et plus précisément à la police locale.

Dit Cahier gaat dieper in op het gezag dat de politie en andere functionarissen in de publieke ruimte dagelijks ervaren op de werkvloer. De visie dat het gezag van de politie tanende is en dat er iets aan de hand is met de politiële weerbaarheid wordt breed gedeeld. Dit Cahier zoekt onder meer een antwoord op de vragen 'Is er iets met het gezag van de politie aan de hand?' en 'Zijn er verschillen tussen België en Nederland?' De Stichting Maatschappij, Veiligheid en Politie (SMVP), thans Stichting Maatschappij en Veiligheid (SMV), bracht in 2000 een essaybundel uit getiteld 'Het gezag van de politie'. Deze bundel vormde de opmaat voor een standpunt van de stichting in 2002 met als titel 'Politie en haar gezag'. Sinds het uitbrengen van het standpunt verstreken er twaalf jaren. Is er in die tijd iets veranderd? Dit Cahier bundelt bijdragen rond drie grote thema's, namelijk (1) het gezag van de politie, (2) imago, vertrouwen en legitimiteit van de politie, thema's die nauw met het gezag van de politie zijn verweven en ten slotte (3) operationeel leiderschap bij de politie.
