On the coast north of Perth is one of the most unusual landscapes in all Australia - the Pinnacles Desert. Out of the bare, yellow, shifting sands rise thousands of huge, limestone pillars. Massive and immobile in such a stark landscape, these grotesquely sculptured stone columns look as if they have stood for ages. What exactly are pinnacles? How did they form? What natural processes were able to create such spectacular structures: And what can they tell us about the evolution of the coastal scenery of this part of Australia? This beautifully illustrated book addresses all these questions in

Rock features are important traces of the formation and development of karst surface. On various karren their record is especially rich, revealing to us the many factors that in diverse conditions formed the karst surface on various carbonate and other rock.We have tried to present the most characteristic rock features and through them the most important factors and processes in the formation of the karst surface, the methods of studying them, and the most outstanding examples.Forty-nine contributing authors offer a wide spectrum of content and examples of rock forms from many karst regions around the world. The first part of the book offers an orderly-organized survey and description of the most characteristic rock forms and presents the physical and chemical corrosion of rock, biocorrosion, the modeling of rock forms, their detailed morphometrics, and numerous descriptions of individual rock forms. The second part is devoted to various examples of rock forms found around the world from Slovenia through North and South America to Australia and Asia. Skalne oblike so pomembna sled oblikovanja in razvoja površinskih kraških pojavov. Še zlasti bogat je njihov zapis na različnih škrapljah. Razkriva nam številne dejavnike, ki v raznovrstnih razmerah oblikujejo kraško površje na različnih karbonatnih in drugih kamninah. Skušali smo zajeti najbolj značilne skalne oblike in skozi njih najbolj pomembne dejavnike in procese oblikovanja kraškega površja ter načine njihovega raziskovanja in najbolj izrazite primere. Širok spekter vsebine razkriva tudi nabor 49 avtorjev in primeri skalnih oblik s številnih kraških področji sveta. Prvi del knjige smiselno podaja pregled najbolj značilnih skalnih oblik in njihov opis, predstavlja fizikalno-kemično raztapljanje kamnine, biokorozijo, modeliranje skalnih oblik, njihovo podrobno morfometrijo ter številne opise posameznih skalnih oblik. Drugi del knjige je posvečen različnim primerom skalnih oblik širom sveta od Slovenije, prek severne in južne Amerike do Avstralije in Azije.

The last five years have been marked by rapid technological and analytical developments in the study of shore processes and in the comprehension of shore deposits and forms, and shoreline change over time. These developments have generated a considerable body of literature in a wide range of professional journals, thus illustrating the cross-disciplinary nature of shore processes and the palaeo-environmental dimension of shore change. The justification of the book lies in bringing together these developments using an objective approach that synthesises current advances, technical progress in t

"This handbook specifies methods, standards and terminology used in soil and land survey investigations related to practical problems of land use and the scientific study of land and soil. It has been widely used and adopted as a standard throughout Australia, providing one reference set of definitions for the characterisation of landform and vegetation and for the description of soils. The book advocates that a comprehensive suite of land and soil attributes be recorded in a uniform manner. This approach is held to be more useful than the allocation of land or soil to preconceived types or classes. Its usefulness is enhanced where computer facilities are available. This revised edition contains significant changes to the Vegetation chapter and revisions to the Location chapter bringing it up-to-date with the use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and changes to the Substrate chapter relating to the regolith."--Provided by publisher.
