This translation of Musique au singulier (2001) from the French identifies what is common to music of all times and cultures. The author, François-Bernard Mâche is a composer and internationally renowned musicologist. He addresses the question of universals in music and demonstrates how musical play is a poetic and natural game that already takes shape in the animal world. Mâche invites the reader to reconsider the traditional opposition between nature and culture and to reflect on experiencing such intense emotions when both listening to and manipulating sounds. This title appeals to students and researchers working in musicology.

Much controversy surrounds Schenker's mature theory and its attempt to explain musical pitch motion. Becoming Heinrich Schenker brings a new perspective to Schenker's theoretical work, showing that ideas characteristic of his mature theory, although in many respects fundamentally different, developed logically out of his earlier ideas. Robert Morgan provides an introduction to Schenker's mature theory and traces its development through all of his major publications, considering each in detail and with numerous music examples. Morgan also explores the relationship between Schenker's theory and his troubled ideology, which crucially influenced the evolution of his ideas and was heavily dependent upon both the empirical and idealist strains of contemporary German philosophical thought. Relying where possible on quotations from Schenker's own words, this book offers a balanced approach to his theory and a unique overview of this central music figure, generally considered to be the most prominent music theorist of the twentieth century.

Drawing on the author's four decades of experience as a concert oboist, this open access book studies a number of foundational issues in the philosophy of music, such as musical meaning and expression, musical ontology and the existence of the musical work, the relation between music and language, and the phenomenology of music. The book surveys the development of Western classical music from the Baroque era through to the 20th century, both from the perspective of contemporary Lithuanian philosophers such as Girnius, Maceina, Šliogeris, and Jackūnas, and 20th century European philosophy. In addition to discussing key questions in the philosophy of music, the book also analyses technical musical terms such as articulation, phrasing, and rhythm. Juozas Rimas was the leading Lithuanian oboist of his generation and is currently professor of music at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. He has premiered over 40 works for oboe (many of them dedicated to him) and was the first wind player in Lithuania to have performed a solo recital back in 1971. He is the recipient of an award from the President of the Republic of Lithuania for his lifetime contribution to Lithuanian culture and art. Professor Rimas' musical career has comprised hundreds of performances of classical music in all forms (orchestra, ensemble, and solo) as well as jazz improvisations and Lithuanian folk songs sung by the author, 16 LP and CD recordings, and over 150 recordings for Lithuanian State Radio. Dr Juozas Rimas Jr is the editor and co-translator of this book (assisting the main translator, Jeremy Hill), and author of the appendices and footnotes. He obtained a doctorate in law from Vilnius University in 2010 and is a practising lawyer in the field of corporate law. He is also the editor of the original Lithuanian edition of Etudes on the Philosophy of Music, published in 2020. .

With flashing lights, bright colors, and big money, game shows have been an integral part of American culture since the days of radio. While the music that accompanies game shows is charming and catchy, it presents two unique, opposing challenges: first, it must exhibit unity in its construction so that, at any point and for any length of time, it is a tuneful, recognizable signifier of the show to which it belongs; at the same time, it must also possess the ability to be started and stopped according to the needs of gameplay without seeming truncated. This book argues that game show music, in particular from 1960 to 1990, deploys a variety of shared techniques in order to manage these two goals, including theme-derived vamps; saturation of motivic material; and harmonic, rhythmic, and formal ambiguity. Together, these techniques make game show themes exciting, memorable, and perfectly suited to their role. Christopher Gage holds doctorates in music theory and organ performance from the University of Kansas. His research is wide-ranging, from keyboard repertoire before 1700 to twentieth-century game show music. Chris is Director of Music at Overbrook Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia and currently teaches music theory at the University of Delaware.
