Abstract

CFO Techniques: A Hands-on Guide to Keeping Your Business Solvent and Successful is a comprehensive and instructive working manual for multitasking chief financial officers and controllers working in the fast-paced commercial environment. Every senior financial professional with an ever-broadening span of control will benefit from this complete outline of the core activities with specific descriptions of individual tasks comprising the daily agenda of a successful CFO or controller. It covers everything from traditional responsibilities like budgeting and financial reporting, to more innovative tasks like performance analytics and business strategy development. While emphasizing specific guidelines on what it takes to excel as a company's head of finance, the book refrains from overwhelming dryness by using cultural references, real-life examples, and a casual tone. With its bite-sized, easy-to-read chapters, CFO Techniques serves as both an invaluable desktop reference handbook and a good bedtime read. Whether you need a quick recommendation on treasury procedures, adhering to GAAP, keeping funds safe from embezzlers, or advice on dealing with the CEO, you will find the answers in this book. Guides you through CFO/controller core responsibilities, function by function Serves as a reference manual on financial matters specific to the small and mid-size commercial environment Goes beyond finance and accounting, addressing the administrative and behavioral issues all CFOs occasionally must address

Abstract

Solvent systems are integral to drug development and pharmaceutical technology. This single topic encompasses numerous allied subjects running the gamut from recrystallization solvents to biorelevant media. The goal of this contribution to the AAPS Biotechnology: Pharmaceutical Aspects series is to generate both a practical handbook as well as a reference allowing the reader to make effective decisions concerning the use of solvents and solvent systems. To this end, the monograph was created by inviting recognized experts from a number of fields to author relevant sections. Specifically, 15 chapters have been designed covering the theoretical background of solubility, the effect of ionic equilibria and pH on solubilization, the use of solvents to effect drug substance crystallization and polymorph selection, the use of solvent systems in high throughput screening and early discovery, solvent use in preformulation, the use of solvents in bio-relevant dissolution and permeation experiments, solvents and their use as toxicology vehicles, solubilizing media and excipients in oral and parenteral formulation development, specialized vehicles for protein formulation and solvent systems for topical and pulmonary drug administration. The chapters are organized such that useful decision trees are included together with the scientific underpinning for their application. In addition, trends in the use of solvent systems and a balance of current views make this monograph useful to both the novice and experienced researcher and to scientists at all developmental stages from early discovery to late pharmaceutical operations.

Abstract

The conventional solvents used in chemical, pharmaceutical, biomedical and separation processes represent a great challenge to green chemistry because of their toxicity and flammability. Since the beginning of the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry in 1998, a general effort has been made to replace conventional solvents with environmentally benign substitutes. Water has been the most popular choice so far, followed by ionic liquids, surfactant, supercritical fluids, fluorous solvents, liquid polymers, bio-solvents and switchable solvent systems. Green Solvents Volume I and II provides a throughout overview of the different types of solvents and discusses their extensive applications in fields such as extraction, organic synthesis, biocatalytic processes, production of fine chemicals, removal of hydrogen sulphide, biochemical transformations, composite material, energy storage devices and polymers. These volumes are written by leading international experts and cover all possible aspects of green solvents' properties and applications available in today's literature. Green Solvents Volume I and II is an invaluable guide to scientists, R&D industrial specialists, researchers, upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, Ph.D. scholars, college and university professors working in the field of chemistry and biochemistry.

Abstract

Natural Products, broadly defined as high value chemical entities derived from plants or microbial sources, have been known and exploited for many years. In recent years, as the need for higher potency and predictability of such products has increased, more sophisticated concentration and isolation procedures have been developed. With the passage of time, such procedures have been rationalized in terms of scientific principles but, in general, theory has followed behind practice, leading at any given time to an absence from the literature of methods which are truly state of the art. Downstream Processing of Natural Products: A Practical Handbook is a highly practical manual which addresses this issue, and guides researchers and industrial workers through the many potential pitfalls of natural product isolation. The contributors to this volume, all of whom have wide practical experience in this field, present state-of-the-art techniques and observations. The three main stages of natural product purification are covered, namely product release, capture, and purification, and both proteins and secondary metabolites are covered. There is special mention of the requirements of the regulatory authorities with respect to Good Manufacturing Practice, and practical guidance is given on scale-up procedures and process scale instrumentation. Downstream Processing of Natural Products: A Practical Handbook will provide essential practical guidance to all those involved in natural product isolation. This includes academic and industrial researchers, postgraduate students and technicians working in the biotechnology field.
