Abstract

Photographic objects are embedded in urban contestation, aesthetically charged by artists, reinserted into social histories, and mobilized to imagine a future city. Photogenic Montreal takes a question initially posed by heritage debates - what does photography preserve? - and creates a rich conversation about the agency of the human actors before and behind the camera, and of the medium itself.

Abstract

This book memorialising the life and work of Ali Al'amin Mazrui comprises more than 130 tributes written by people ranging from heads of state to journalists. Presented here are those tributes for which copyright permissions were received from among the hundreds that appeared online and print. In preparing this book, it was made very clear that, unlike other books of tributes to great men and women, there would be no segmentation of the sections based on writers' and speakers' positions in life. Instead, it was decided that the tributes be presented in alphabetical order based on writers' and speakers' last names. The decision hinged on the fact that Mazrui would not have apposed any segmentation of people by class, race, ethnicity and gender etc. Nonetheless, out of great respect for Mazrui's immediate family members, their tributes are presented first, followed by those from his global family members. Also included at the beginning of the book are three chapters that comprise an introductory essay, a brief biography of Mazrui, and an essay on metaphorical-linguistic analysis of the tributes that follow. The book also has a preface by the co-editors and a forward by Salim Ahmed Salim, the former Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania and Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now known as the Africa Union. Dr. Salim, who served as the Secretary-General of the OAU from 1989 to 2001, was Mazrui's friend and contemporary. Mazrui once described Salim as "Mr Africa" and the "first real postcolonial Secretary-General of the OAU.

Abstract

In The Cooing of the Dove and the Cawing of the Crow Suzanne Pinckney Stetkevych offers original translations, close readings, and new interpretations of selected poems from the two contrasting diwans of the blind Late ʿAbbāsid master-poet, Abū al-ʿAlāʾ al-Maʿarrī (d. 449 H./1057 C.E.). The first is Saqṭ al-Zand (Sparks of the Flint), the highly esteemed collection of qaṣīdah poetry of his youth, which he later disavowed. The second is Luzūm Mā Lā Yalzam (Requiring What Is Not Required), the programmatic double-rhymed collection from his later period of withdrawal and seclusion. She argues that the contrasting ‘poetics of engagement’ and ‘poetics of disengagement’ of the two diwans reflect the transition from High Classical to Post Classical aesthetics.--

Abstract

"Singer Al Jarreau was born in Milwaukee, the fifth child of a minister father and a piano-playing mother. Growing up Black in the inner city, he attended Lincoln High School, where he was a prominent student leader, athlete and musician. He earned degrees in psychology and counseling at Ripon College and the University of Iowa. Al moved to San Francisco, where he was a counselor by day and a jazz singer by night. Quitting his day job, he forged a successful life as a club singer, including a year and a half on the Playboy Club circuit. Finally "discovered" in 1975 (at age 35) by Warner Brothers Records, he recorded 13 albums in 20 years for Warners. He became a "star" in the early '80s, crafting best-selling albums with a unique combination of jazz, pop and R&B. Ultimately, he was the first artist to win Grammy Awards in those three categories. Stardom in the world of popular music can be fleeting, however, and as records sales waned, Al had to adjust to new, sometimes harsh, realities. Al Jarreau follows Al's career and music through contemporary articles, filmed documentaries and extensive interviews with family members, fellow musicians, friends and associates"--

Abstract

Scholarship on Iraq under the Ba'th regime has traditionally focused on the rule of Saddam Hussein and his narrow inner circle. The centrality of the former president in Iraqi politics until spring 2003 and the tyranny of his regime were evident, and available sources concerning developments inside Iraqi society during that period were scarce. This book explores whether traditional paradigms of totalitarian rule can be applied to Ba'thist Iraq, closely examining state-society relations and uncovering the nature of the regime and how Iraqis lived with it. The study creates a conceptual

Abstract

This first of three volumes comprising 'Abd al Qâdir's work contains 215 of the 372 original chapters. Based on the Dār al-yaqaza al-'arabiyya (1966-1967) and on the manuscript of the Library of Alger, this translation addresses the work done so far by Michel Chodkiewicz and by A. Khurshīd. It deals with mystic comments on Qur'anic verses and prophetic translations inspired by Ibn 'Arabi's work. It serves as a useful introduction to Futuḥāt and Fusus .
