Suburbia and Rural Landscapes in Medieval Sicilypresents the results of the main ongoing archaeological and historical research focusing on medieval suburbia and rural sites in Sicily. It is thus intended to update traditional views regarding the evolution of this territory from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages by bringing into the picture new data from archaeological excavations undertaken at several sites across Sicily, new information from surveys of written sources, and new reflections based on the analysis of both material and documentary sources. The volume is divided into thematic areas: Urbanscapes, suburbia, hinterlands; Inland and mountainous landscapes; Changes in rural settlement patterns; and Defence and control of the territory. The essays underline the fundamental contribution of archaeological research in Sicily to the debate on the formation of early medieval landscapes at the crossroads between the Byzantine and Islamic worlds. A comparison with other research areas and constant dialogue with historical sources constitute essential elements for advancing our knowledge of the rural and suburban world of Sicily as a case study illustrating wider Mediterranean dynamics.

This is the results of 12 hectares of archaeological excavation undertaken between 1990 and 2001. As well as uncovering roughly half of the medieval village, the investigations revealed that Stratton's origins stretched back to the early Anglo-Saxon period, with the settlement remaining in continuous use through to c. 1700. In contrast to many of the other major excavations of Anglo-Saxon settlements, the evidence from Stratton provides insights into the lives of a low-status rural community, whose development can be traced over the course of more than a millennium. This book presents a chronological account of Stratton's development; evidence for its economy, trading relations, industrial activities and agricultural landscape; and a discussion of how people lived and died there before the village was finally extinguished by the creation of the classic estate landscape of Stratton Park.

The burial ground on the Obere Holzwiese consists of 215 burials and is therefore by far the largest uncovered burial site of Carolingian times in Lower Austria north of the Danube. It belonged to a fortified central settlement, a center of power, the core of which built a 'manor farm'. In addition to the comprehensive archaeological analysis the volume contains investigations concerning archaeobotanics, material analyses, metallography, anthropology, textiles and leather.

"The Medieval Iberian Treasury in the Context of Cultural Interchange-expanded beyond the special issue of Medieval Encounters from which it was drawn-centers on the magnificent treasury of San Isidoro de Leo´n to address wider questions about the meanings of cross-cultural luxury goods in royal-ecclesiastical settings during the central Middle Ages. Now fully open access and with an updated introduction to ongoing research, an additional chapter, composite bibliographies, and indices, this multidisciplinary volume opens fresh ways into the investigation of medieval objects and textiles through historical, art historical, and technical analyses. Carbon-14 dating, iconography, and social history are among the methods applied to material and textual evidence, together shining new light on the display of rulership in medieval Iberia"--

Pits and Boots derives from excavations carried out in 2007-8, in advance of an extension to the Bon Accord Centre in Aberdeen, that uncovered the backlands of an area that would have formed part of the industrial quarter of the medieval town. The site is well-dated by dendrochronology, augmented by artefactual evidence, and indicates activity from the late 12th century AD into the early modern period, with a particularly intensive period in the 13th century. Structural evidence consists primarily of the backland boundaries, hearth/ovens, several wood-lined wells and many large pits. It is the contents of these pits and wells which forms the core of this monograph. The waterlogged conditions within the pits and wells has meant that a remarkable assemblage of organic remains including leather, wooden artefacts, textiles, animal pelts, fibres, and cordage has survived. The leather assemblage is the largest ever to be found in Scotland and has revealed a range of activities associated with the use of animal hides, from hide processing to tanning and shoemaking. The wood assemblage is also extensive and includes bowls, platters, coopered vessels and tools. Metalwork, crucibles, clay mould fragments and ceramics all testify to the industrial nature of the area, while the large quantities of animal and fishbone demonstrate that butchery on an industrial scale took place in the area. The excavation charts the changing nature of this once-peripheral area of Aberdeen, from an industrial zone in the medieval period, to horticultural and domestic spaces in post-medieval times, and has thus greatly enhanced our knowledge of Scottish urban development.

After World War II, the architectural historian Arnold Tschira taught for almost two decades architecture students to understand their future field of activity as a historically shaped environment. His interdisciplinary lectures were attended by students from other faculties as well as an interested audience from outside the university. As a member of the supervisory board of the German Archaeological Institute (Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, DAI) representing his profession, he succeeded Robert Koldewey and Armin von Gerkan and significantly contributed to the field of architectural history research. As the Director of the Institute of Architectural History at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Karlsruhe (TH), his research activities included, besides the era of antiquity, the architectural art of the Middle Ages in Baden and the classicism of Friedrich Weinbrenner, who founded the first building school in Baden in 1800, from which later the Technical University of Karlsruhe and finally today's research and education institution KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) were to emerge. This commemorative volume for Arnold Tschira, with which former students and colleagues of his institute trace his career and his fields of activity, represents a piece of research history rooted in the formidable tradition in the field of architectural history in Karlsruhe.
